Hugo is easily better than Yugo. I'll take a likable character who clearly goes through a redemptive arc despite some mistakes over a rude jerk. Yes both are meant to make Alita mature past her first crush but Yugo has no redeeming qualities.

I haven't seen the movie in 2 months and some stuff admittedly went over my head during my first viewing (I was slightly drunk). I have some questions

1. Alita was found on top of the scrapyard so it must have been she was recently dumped there when she was found by Ido. BUT I also remember a scene where she was part of this invasion thing and Ido mentions she's almost 300 years old? so confused by the timeline
2. How did her still human brain survive not only the fall but any amount of time it spent down there?
3. Why does she have taste buds or the ability to process food? yeah it's cute to see her snack on oranges but if her brain still needs to be fed nutrients on a regular basis then this brings back question 2. on how it was able to survive with no damage for so long

Amazing motivation. How does he know it's better? Vector has a nice life at Iron City, why couldn't Hugo be satisfied with that if his only concern is about better life quality? He never shows the kind of obsession with Zalem that he has in the manga, so there's no real reason to decline Vector's offer.

1. It's possible trash gets moved around in the scrapyard, looking at the tractors and cranes, and she was at the bottom of the pile near ground level, so it's possible she was under a huge pile for trash, and it was just moved.
2. Her brain was encased in that metal skull, so her head hitting the ground didn't damage her brain.
3. The way her brain is powered is different from human brains, and while it needs nutrients to stay healthy, if it was just shut off, it probably wouldn't result in brain damage.
None of my explanations are canon, but make sense.

Your questions are kind of the point, he's blinded by this quest to get there. He doesn't know that it's actually better there, just that he's been told it is. And yes he does show his obsession with Zalem, from the beginning he befriends Alita because he thinks she went there, and the scene where he shows her his secret place, mirrors similar to the way it plays in the manga and OVA.

you do realize I can swing these exact same critiques at you about Yugo right? Why does Yugo give a shit about what's up there when it got his brother killed? It's common knowledge it's a death sentence to make the attempt. Either way, nobody is arguing that Hugo has a better backstory. The main point is that he's likable and Yugo is completely unlikable because he's a stupid, rude, goal obsessed kid. He has no likable qualities. He might have a more explained history but that doesn't mean much if you actively want him gone for being so indifferent to Alita.

I don't consider myself an expert and gnosticism is a very dense area of esoterica. It threatened early Christianity because it was decentralized and in some groups pretty egalitarian. It was seen as heresy as it was essentially 'christian-buddhism' so there's no concise history on it. It has many different off shoots and cannibalizes other mythology. The main tenet though of all it is basically; this material life is an illusion. A prison created by a false, illegitimate god and we are severed from the truth. Gnosis is knowledge of this and escaping the material is your goal.

to be fair, that was specifically meant to be alienating and jarring. Penderecki isn't always that abstract. Music is subjective though. It doesn't need to follow a consistent pattern. I consider it music even though there's continual change and it's hard to find a graspable sense of melody. But the melodies are there.

Is the 170 million budget before or after the Texas tax rebates? They can get the sales tax back, and also up to 20% of the budget through the Texas Moving Image Industry Incentive Program. The budget of the latter was cut down in 2016 though, so I’m not sure that Alita got the full 20% rebate.

The final budget listed on wikipedia is 170 million, and that's after the tax, so I'm assuming they got the whole thing.
