originally it was a junk ship. Now it has been retconned into having ork magik that makes it more powerful than anything in the universe because it's powered by hopes and dreams

The old EU canon understood this and created lore behind it that shows the ship was hundreds of years old by the time Han gets it. There was a book called Millenium Falcon and it was like an anthology of short stories about various previous owners of it and shit that it had been through. So by the time Han had it, it had already been nearly totalled and rebuilt a few times. Was pretty cool.
