in the books i believe it's implied that the undead are a creation or some sort of side-effect of the magics used by the children of the forest, and were intended to be a "weapon" in their war against the first men that kicked them off of their land.

The Night King being 'the big bad' is debatable, he represents a threat but if you were watching the show 'the big bad' could be anyone like Cersei, or even Robern Baratheon and Rhaegar Targaryen.
