It was disappointing but not staggering. The utter and complete incompetence and lack of awareness of what made the series great displayed in the Nu-wars movies have been staggering.

Force Awakens was about on par or at worst slightly weaker than Phantom Menace and Last Jedi was better than Attack of the Clones. It all comes down to how Rise of the Skywalker will measure up to Revenge of the Sith which, to be fair, was by far the best of the prequels.

TLJ was by far the series worst. No contest. AotC at least took itself seriously despite how goofy it came across.

Lucas can't write dialogue, he has characters explaining the plot in a very stiff way. Ford and Hamill called Lucas out on his writing, whereas on the prequels, everyone sucked it up.

Lucas does have great ideas, and stupid ideas. What happened was in the OT people like Kurtz, Marcia, Kirchner, filtered out the dumb shit and kept the great stuff in.

What the prequels and sequels prove is that auteur theory is bullshit; GL on the prequels, and RJ, on The Last Jedi, show that Star Wars should not be handled by an auteur director, it should be producer led.

When AOTC was released it was considered at the time to be better than TPM simply by the reduction in Jar Jar's presence on screen. This culminated in ROTS giving him just two words of dialogue in the entire film.

Nu-Wars being embarrassingly bad doesn't retroactively make the PT good. Each one of the prequels is about 30-40 minutes of decent world building, spectacle, and storytelling, which is then filled out with boring/pointless/stupid/annoying bloat.

I still like the setting and characters of the PT time period, but I think most of that is based on nostalgia and The Clone Wars show.

George Lucas is a great concept and world building writer but horrible character writer. A New Hope had actors, editors, etc telling George that his shit stink and during the editing process it was masterfully edited to assentuate the positives and hide the negatives. Editing made Star Wars a hit. On the prequels there was nobody that could help check George's ideas and he had more control over the films. Had he had someone who could check him the prequels would have been just as good films IMO because they still have a good foundation lore wise.

The sequels while having good cinematography and competent scripts had no Lore to back it up.

Feels kinda surreal that everyone now loves the prequels. Back around 2009-2014, when you had the Plinkett reviews at their height of popularity, the prequels were meme-hated into the stratosphere on not just Yea Forums but most other forums, a la Dragon Ball GT, Nickelback, Dane Cook, etc. Folks here would endlessly quote "It's so dense", "Jar jar is the key to all this", "Real real not so real", etc.

That all changed in 2015 though. The week after TFA came out, I distinctly remember people on Yea Forums and other forums starting to say "Hey at least the prequels had heart, unlike this rehash", and the first big "prequel memes" also started on Reddit around this time. The backlash against TLJ just further solidified this shift into people liking the prequels.

Now many people on the Internet legit love/defend the prequels, a complete turnaround from their extremely negative reputation in the late 2000s-early 2010s.
