And there is no reason why they will break that very intentional rule now. D&D HATE flashback scenes and have avoided using them at all costs. I meant her decision was supposed to be understandable from the audiences perspective. She offered plenty of opportunity to avoid execution and let them make their own choice.

Literature is not a competition, an endless quest to make your works more erudite, more labyrinthine than those of your predecessors. If that were the case, Finnegans Wake, or perhaps something by Arno Schmidt, would occupy the position that Ulysses finds itself in. You don't need to have the knowledge of the entire western canon and six different textual studies before you can even begin to turn the first page, just dive in. You really have to ask yourself, why do you read literature? I'd assume it's not solely for the transfer of ideas and perspectives, or you'd just read philosophy. Literature, as puffed up and vainglorious as the study can be, is first and foremost about having fun. It's fun to dissect and fall in to these narratives, these characters that so many thousands before you have been lost in, enraptured and haunted by. This is a work with incredible depth, but I feel like it loses its magic when it is approached as a procedural, a tome of knowledge from which no joy can escape. The best advice I could give to a new reader of Ulysses is not to worry if you don't "understand" something and just go for it. It is a work that is meant to be enjoyed.
