D&D were in the untenable position of not wanting to include Stannis in the show story at all, but unable to do so because he's kind of like the glue holding the various plotlines in Westeros together in the books. You'll notice that the show takes a giant nosedive in quality from the very moment the Stannis storyline starts to diverge from the books (when Melly orders him to go to the Wall, instead of having Davos convince him). Stannis didn't fit the story that D&D wanted to tell, but he was such an integral part of the book narrative that they had to give him a token inclusion.

There was another "self-aware" line about how Winterfell couldn't sustain the armies and dragons. As if the show ever cares about logistics or resources unless it's convenient to form drama. I noticed in the most recent episode that the townspeople of Winterfell look at Greyworm and Missandei with disdain because they're a different race, woke people were saying it's white people racism but they're also filtering that through their lens - I think it's actually pretty fitting in universe for people in a feudal society to be highly suspicious of outsiders.

This really felt like a missed opportunity to both correct a ridiculous premise and make Tyrion useful again. Remember in season one where he made the blueprints for a custom saddle for Bran based on the premise that a dwarf can't ride a horse due to the size ratio difference? Rather than make eunuch jokes, Tyrion should have been designing a dragon saddle and could have had a quip about it "being the same thing really, just size differences." Suddenly he's actually a useful character, we're reminded he's smart, it's a callback to season one because normies love callbacks, and it makes the Whole New World scene seem less ridiculous.
