I remember the first one worked better because the directors were on a leash, it felt like a high budget indie scifi movie.
The followups from what I remember was where the story got messy.
I was in highschool when the first movie came out but I wasn't into films at the time so basically I pretty much never heard of it until it got its original vhs/dvd release and was essentially ignorant to the hype back then.
I remember not liking it very much though.

Also, 1 sequel instead of 2. The sequel would have taken place mostly in the matrix, as Neo begins a mass awakening and exodus from the matrix slowly ruining the machines power source.

the second film's arc with Neo should have been similar to Luke's in Empire Strikes back, he ventures off far into either the matrix or real world to learn more. the main story of Reloaded should be like the Iliad, with characters on both sides of the war positioning themselves into an eternal high stakes stalemate around Zion. the final film should have bee like the Odyssey with Neo finally voyaging back to Zion to arrive in disguise and reveal his insane power to the machines and save it just in time by punching a hole through the sources face and causes it to go into nuclear meltdown

At the time, I'll admit that I was hyped for the sequels, but then it became clear that the Wachowski Bros. never had any idea with where the story should go next and were just winging it. I'm now of the considered opinion that unplanned sequels are generally a bad idea.
