Book Cersei starts off relatively competent, but spirals into paranoia, alcoholism, gluttony, and being a retard after Joffrey dies. She literally can't stop being a whore and finding new and exciting ways to hurt herself and her endgame. Also, after her shaming she starts pulling the penitent puritan queen shtick Margaery did in the show.
