both del toro and hellboy have a built in niche audience plus all the shit he went through to get it made the way he wanted made it way better than it could have been

The world Del Toro created + the visuals/costumes inspired in Lovecraftian themes were pretty fucking great for their time.
I'd say it was more due to Perlman's stupid rants and the memes that followed, even if he isn't in the movie.
Also, the movie appeared out of nowhere in my country, barely any publicity I'd say.
