Border control is required for any of the other factory laws to work. Obviously they aren't going to enforce the firearm ban over the entire planet's surface.

Some kind of legal structure will always evolve, "civil" offenses would be handled by clans or gangs in different territories of the city, and over the time something akin to a set of treaty laws would emerge. So a member of Clan A who steals in Clan B territory will not be punished by Clan B as normal but instead given to Clan A to punish as they see fit, and Clan A will pay a fee to Clan B for taking the offender off their hands.

Over time, the factory administration would probably learn to recognize the signs of an evolved and effective "civil" legal structure (e.g. a crime family) and set up protocols for the deckmen to engage with the ranking officials of this legal structure for the purpose of furthering the factory's interests.

In the manga, this would be how Vector's gang rose to power. He managed to get control of the affairs in an area of the scrapyard and the factory recognized that his group contributed to its smooth operation. Vector in the manga is shown having access to luxury goods normally only available in Zalem, so the factory bribes civilian administrators (functionally mafiosi) with luxury goodies to keep a semblance of day-to-day order in the lives of workers.

Now this is the kind of analysis I was looking for. I do like the idea of regulation being set-up int he context of pockets of power. It does speak to how powerful Vector must have been in the film given his control over much of the Motorball market. There must have been a hell of a power vacuum to fill after he died, even with the Factory superstructure to fall back on. You'd wonder if the Zalem enforcers who run the Factory itself wouldn't see it as a good time to push more formally in to the crime syndicates after Vector died. Then again it might be nice to have a stooge to kill if things go wrong.

My analysis is more based on the manga, where Vector doesn't have that much power. The film simplifies it by putting him in charge of motorball and everything, in the manga he's a major player in the body parts market which is how Hugo got started working for him. In the movie, Vector says Hugo has "a solid future with my team," and says no more. In the manga pic related is Vector's pitch to Hugo.

So we can see that the factory is recognizing that civilian structures have become robust and predictable and that it's decided to grant them autonomy in some areas where deckmen were once used. In today's world we might call this "privatization," in Zalem's terms it amounts to using certain skilfull members of the surface population to reduce the computational cost of maintaining the production line.

I have shit lighting, so the details look a bit more harsh than they actually are.

Imagine a Mad Max style convoy turning up and wanting supplies at the gates of Zalem. Presumably they'd be turned away because the Factory doesn't need any more workforce. This leads me to conclude that "statecraft" under the system of factory law, as practiced by a person like Vector, would amount to reverse-engineering the artificial intelligence driving factory decision-making and figuring out how to behave in ways that will make it recognize you as a "valid" civilian legal authority. These protocols, of course, are not documented anywhere for the benefit of surface-dwellers. You just have to figure out the unwritten laws governing how the factory recognizes civilian legal structures and get it to see you as an authority. It's a combination of Machiavelli and machine learning.

In the manga, it seems like Vector, despite his long-standing service to the factory, has never once personally spoken to a Zalemite. There must be a major taboo against anyone in Zalem interacting with surface-dwellers, so Zalemites probably don't steer the interaction of deckmen and factory enforcers themselves in real time. Rather, the Zalemite engineers would write algorithms for factory behavior in relation to the service, peruse a log of interactions with surface-dwellers, and then refine the algorithms to see if they can create greater efficiency.

Perhaps on rare occasions, a Zalemite engineer may highjack a deckman in real time during complicated negotiations with no clear precedent. Pains would be taken to ensure that surface-dwellers would not note the switch-off from AI to Zalemite control; all they would notice is that a deckman seemed strangely erudite for a short time. The deckman would either function as a "voice changer" for the Zalemite, repeating words spoken by the engineer, or it would work as a text-to-speech program reading what the engineer types.

The caveat here would be the movie canon of Nova acting through chipped people when he sees it as necessary. However it still ties in to the notion that Zalemites are not to be in direct contact with people in Iron City. The idea that they watch behind the eyes of all would likely help keep the inner crime circles in line, helping keep the peace for optimal production.

Did you ever notice that there is nothing explicit against AI in factory law? Perhaps it's a secret law and Zalem will act quickly to annihilate anyone who tries to create AI on the surface but otherwise never discusses the law. They wouldn't have a written law against AI because the Zalemite AI has as one of its #1 directives to prevent the mere idea of "developing AI" from entering the public consciousness.

In the manga the Zalemites don't actually run their society, it's run for them by an AI they don't control. Logically the AI may recognize other AIs as potential threats, recognize that every AI starts as an idea and then organize the society under its purview to eliminate "pre-AI ideas."

Yeah, in the movie there isn't an absolute taboo against a Zalemite interacting with a surface-dweller but the rest of it holds. The interesting thing to see will be whether Nova's position as "watcher behind the eyes" means that is in charge of Zalem in general or just in charge of surface relations. URM seemed to think that he was important enough to target specifically.

It was the opportunity of a lifetime for RR and Rosa. There were a million ways for it to flop or turn out mediocre but they managed to catch lightning in a bottle.

I hope Kishiro is vindicated by this, he was never big in Japan, always kind of the kid brother of cyberpunk creators beneath Masamune Shirow and Sonoda Kenichi. And cyberpunk sci-fi was itself an unpopular sub-genre of science fiction over there.

Not physically. I'm mentally tired. It's hard all the time and it's a constant effort to maintain. It feels like I've been mentally running an ultramarathon every single day since I was 14. I'm so worn out. Actual sleep is the only release but I can only sleep so much of the day away. Things like Alita energize me and give me a second wind, but even that fades after a while. I can feel it slipping away from me already.

I just want to lay down and never get up. I'm tired. Really tired.

Honestly the sound design in the movie is fantastic. Every little thing sells it so well.

I like how the film really is a clash or combination of two different aesthetics. At times, the movie is very clearly a Rodriguez movie, with some of the city life and the guitar guy, and other times like the shots of Zalem and the underwater URM ship, or very clearly more Cameron influences. It's such an interesting best of both worlds, and you can even look at some scenes and think with the mindset of one director, and then the other, and both fit.
