It doesn’t. It saterizes the way affluent white liberals fetishize black people. The movie did suffer from the hype cycle and overexposure though, it was just an idea who’s time had come misinterpreted by most people. Black people saw it as cultural touchstone of a relatable story of white malevolence and some white people saw it as anti white propaganda. It appealed to a large box office audience since its a horror movie.

At least the surgery wasn't half bad, better than some McGuffin machine that can transfer consciousness, they didn't say how much of the brain they left out, would be an interesting subject, like how much can you take away and you're still "you", it also means the white people left a part of their consciousness in their old bodies.
They could've set up the flash as the trigger for hypnotism or used the sound of tapping on the mug to wake them up, but it's hard to expect anything good from a hack.
