I think when you are young you can do anything. Both action and comedies. And mysteries and slice of life. But when you are old you just lost the charm to do comedies.
Some people Such as Leslie Nelson can do it when they are olde . But even he hit the wall in Scary Movies series.
With the CGI effects, and the aging of a specific generation, actions with older leads become acceptable. Hence we got things like RED and Taken. But they are like Leslie Nelson in Scary Movies. Just acceptable but not as charming as Naked Gun.

Ford actually looked like he was having fun in the expendables as well as Blade Runner and Star Wars. I think he maybe felt he was signing off his career so was just enjoying the process for his last few times.
