Sub. It'll never be confirmed nor denied if Spike was jewish or not, but I'm sure as hell not listening to a jew voicing him.

I think you should always go for sub, that way you get what the director really wanted from the VA's, not a watered down version filtered through someone else directing. That said, I've heard Bebop has one of the better dubs.

In the sub Spike sounds like a 6 year old, Jet speaks spanish and Faye isn't even voiced by a woman.

They're good in different ways but in Spike's case, dub is clearly superior

it's one of those rare instances where the dub is better than the sub

The dub in Japanese with no subtitles with a fluent understanding of Japanese which is how it originally aired.

Reminder Cowboy Bebop is trash entry level anime.

Why can't more anime be dubbed this well? Is it impossible to find competent english voice actors? Is it a money issue?

It really depends on how good the US voice direction is. Unless it is really bad, I would suggest the dub and then switch or rewatch it subtitled if you like the show.

Though I do hate subtitles getting in the way of the quality Japanese animation.

Everything is a money issue. You're hiring actors to record lines. Plus directors and ADR people to translate and time the new dialog properly. That is much more than just hiring someone to translate and put subtitles.

if you really want to know the honest answer it's because voice acting isn't considered as seriously in the US. Voice acting in Japan is rigorious and actually thought out with the va's talking to each other in the booths so it makes the conversation flow easier. in the US sometimes the va's record their lines willy nilly and blah blah blah basically incompetance. If the US had the same thinking as Japan does, like they did with bebop, there would be better dubs

I like the voice acting I'm going with dub also with cowboy Bebop I think a lot of anime popular with Americans has good voice acting

Anime was a really niche market in the US until fairly recently hiring a VA for an anime was not easy, nobody with good voice talent took it seriously so you had to find lower tier video game VAs to compensate.

There was a good interview with Sean Schemmel talking about him becoming better and better as a VA for Goku in the the Dragon Ball series, and how they cast him just because he happened to be there.

This, Eva, DBZ (Ocean), and Outlaw Star are the only shows I can't watch in Japanese.

It was basically an coincidence. The right people were available at the right time and they all thought the show was good enough to want to be on it. Plus back then there wasn't a crazy rush to immediately dub stuff 1-2 weeks after Japanese broadcast.

You had the right conditions and the right people with perfect gaps in their schedules. I think it also has to do with perception. Bebop is a very west-inspired series so it doesn't seem as foreign to have American accents and tones

what about Black Lagoon? You can stomach a Japanese dude trying to play a tall black guy? Or the fact that most of the main cast is American and they're all supposed to be speaking English to each other?

Patlabor dub is superior too.

Steins;Gate has a fantastic dub imo
