Peter Jackson got stuck coming on after del fatass left because new line didn't agree with his vision for the movie, wasn't given more time to figure out how he wanted to go about the movies, and was forced to make it a trilogy because lotr was. There's an interview where he explains how he didn't even know what to shoot to fill up all the time at points so what we ended up with was a lot of cgi effects to fill up screen time. Sure he may have overdid it at points but a lot of it was because of constraints placed on him.

that was always my thought on it too. all of the trilogy movies are at least 3 hours, and that's not even on their extended versions. the hobbit book isn't even that long anyway, i think it's still shorter than return of the king which is the shortest of the books. no reason it couldn't have been one 3 hour kino instead of a trilogy of shit.

He should have just been based like Viggo, who i heard turned down a good lump of money for an appearance in the hobbit just because he said it wouldn't be in line with the book.

What I meant by wasn't given more time is he was only given a few months of production time, the original movies had years, because they were behind schedule with del Toro leaving and had to begin shooting almost immediately. I think it was only like 4 or 5 months? And with the BoTFA they had to even postpone shooting because there was a point where Jackson had no idea what to even make the plot about because the source material realistically should have allowed for at most 2 movies or even just one longer one.

I doubt it wil be good. However, its mediocrity will have the positive effect of peeling away Jackson's stranglehold of Tolkien in the popular imagination and help people realize the books really are the best.
