3 hours is a bit much - I think around 150 minutes is more suitable for the whole movie. I like how they were able to condense things in the first movie, while still spending time on the scenes that mattered. Two hours was a tiny bit too short though, pacing-wise.

I had my final viewing yesterday last night, and I expected it to go just as all the others. Had a fun long drive up to the theater where I was going to see it, brought an orange and some chocolate to complete it, and I figured it would end as normal, just going back home with a smile and I come to these threads. But, I don't know what, I think something snapped. This was the first time I took a full bite out of the orange to replicate what Alita did, and as the film went on, I started to get more and more emotional. Near the end, during the especially emotionally heavy parts, much so the church scene and subsequent finale, I think I broke. I silently bawled throughout all of this, I just cried hard, really hard. I feel like I was almost having a revelation, I had maybe finally reached ultimate heal status. I kept my cool heading out of the theater, but when I got back to the car and thinking about the film again, I started to bawl, and I started to think why. Why on Earth is this film doing this to me? Why did I go see it 13 times? What is making me snap right now on this viewing? I think it's I finally understood why this film is so special and what it really symbolizes for me and my attachment to pop culture. I won't get in much about me, but I've watched thousands of films, media is my forte, my parents first introduced me to the greats of film back when I was 10, it's just what I do. Going in to the industry has made me, possibly, unhealthily attached to some circles of pop culture, but I want to say, that's how a lot of people are now. Being in a constant dripfeed of nonstop incessant bullshit corporate products has warped us in to consuming this stuff, without much care conscious realization that we do. Just keep consuming more of these movies that don't say anything about who we are, don't teach us lessons, don't inspire us to be better human beings. The one thing I really disliked about the movie are costumes. There's absolutely nothing cyberpunk, scifi or post-apocalyptic about them. They just hired bunch of extras right from the streets wearing their own casual clothes, which made it look like everyone is from 2010s instead of 500 years in future, living a lawless, apolitical, atheist, nihilistic, bleak shithole. It was so jarring and disappointing.

It's a real shame because, I think this might be an unpopular opinion here I really like female leads. There's a very real problem with male leads not being allowed to have any depth to their character or showing any weakness, sure there's exceptions but I'm talking about things in general. Alita had the kind of serious emotional development in it that you rarely see in action films with male leads.

You've just realized how empty much of entertainment is (and has been since the age of pulp fiction), while there are some exceptions like this. It's because they don't actually believe that strongly about the things they say. They get attached to surface level characteristics and can't accept character development. They see characters as cardboard thin avatars for opinions rather than as human characters that are changed by the world and make an impact on the world around them.
I saw an embarrassing Twitter thread where a blue checkmark was praising some DC comics characters for being latina and Muslim - and it was apparent that the guy had never read the comics. He just liked the character because he'd read on Wikipedia that he was a Muslim.

And, I could keep writing on, and on, and on, I talked with one of my friends for three hours about it, but I didn't want to take up too much room here. I also liked Aloy in Horizon Zero Dawn - the URM ship scene in Alita reminded me of that. Granted, as the player character she sort of gets to mirror the player's choices, but I enjoyed the hell out of that story.

Watching Motorball through the eyes of the players like they do in the manga must be so fucking disorienting. Glad Rodriguez went this route. There are actually a lot of cuts in the Motorball sequence, but they're movement cuts focused on the same objects, making them feel seamless. It reminds me a little bit of Kung Fu movies - very clear shots and minimal use of shakey-cam, blurs and jumpcuts to hide that the action doesn't make sense. You can really tell that they planned out the action sequences from the scrimmage scene to the final Motorball set piece.
