The girl on the left is his classmate. Her mom got divorced. Her mom is a pharmaceutical sales and is stressed out. The girl's main problem is that her mom never does house chores. And she sleeps with her head teacher.

The head teacher told them both the high school will close and their future job is to sell BBQ on street.
And there are several other characters.

Just to give some perspective about what this movie is about.

Honestly I don't know, I've never been there. My mental image of it probably comes from movies and it's always portrayed as a grim, grey place with a heavy presence of Catholicism. Also I watched The Last Family recently.

The director spent 3.5 hours listing the relationship and career of the local people, one by one, item by item, and conclude that they are all worthless.

I get that this movie tries to be different from other feel good, positive, sunshine Chinese movies. I just don't think you need to go through all that.

From Chinese people I have met, their lives are hell.

They are crammed into schools where they need to study 14 hours a day from about age 8 onwards. Then they need weekend classes. A lot of these classes are useless time wasting, such as marxism & party doctrine. They HAVE to do this, if they do not, they will not get into a good university and will fail at life and be dubbed total losers. Men outnumber the women so you are competing for a much smaller pool.

Women/their families will ask for a huge dowry, including a house and a car, or you will not get married. They will dump you and find someone else. Typically this is done before age 27, just a few years after university is over with. Oh, then it's all rainbows and sunshine right?

Nope. Public holidays do not exist - you do a get a day off, but the company is allowed to replace the day with a saturday/sunday to make up the lost time. So there is no real holiday. You are EXPECTED to do twelve hour days, 6 days a week. If not, you will be fired very soon. This continues until you retire.

That is the life of Chinese people.

Oh but they have tall buildings and a few rich people due to a property bubble, so that makes them enviable.

comparing this to Jia Zhangke movies i feel like Jia portrays China as a character much more than hu bo, so it seems less clear the impact that the surrounding has on the characters(but there are some moments like the senior housing and when the kid stares at the urban landscape, maybe im forgetting other ones)

Chinese high school students can either go a humanities oriented route or a maths and science one. Other than that, they all have to take a morality class, but it's just basic stuff. It doesn't matter which path you take, university placements are all about acing the gaokao.
