George established there are force beings with powers that could bitch slap the Jedi and Sith into a black hole and back. There are mystical realms that exist inside the force itself that transcend time and the laws of physics, then you have the Whills that supposedly control/are the will of the force and basically guide the fate of the galaxy putting into question everyone's free will. This is all from Lucas himself.
So really JJ can get away with rules like those.

the jedi believe that merging with the force is a good thing and the more in tune with the force you are the more you can retain your original personality / identity until it's no longer needed.
the sith believe in continual life, immortality, imposition of their will over physicality. but that's missing the mark a bit. a sith doesn't have to impose himself on the material world in that way, he can simply refuse to merge with the force through sheer force of will alone. the problem is that most sith don't want to have to do this, they don't want to get that close to death due to fear, they want to continue to live physically instead. so they never prepare for the eventuality of death because they're so afraid of losing their lives that they focus on physical immortality.
so in a way, if you strike down a sith powerful enough to do just this, you actually make him far more powerful than he was originally while in a physical form (flashback to obi-wan's line prior to his death) because it jolts him into a state of mind that makes him bring out all of his anger, all of his will, all of his determination, absolutely all of his power in order to not cease to exist by merging with the force. i mean, imagine the sheer force of dark side energy it would take to push back the force as a whole and impose your own separation from it, on it, when technically you are a part of it. you are literally tearing the force apart with your own will.
so not only did luke / vader / leia fail when they seemingly destroyed palpatine, they made him far more powerful than he had ever been before, just like how vader made obi-wan more powerful when he killed him.
