Re-reading Berserk ahead of Episode 358 has made me realize just HOW bad Game of Thrones is. I feel like the main issue is that GRRM wants to set up this political palace drama thing in the first three seasons but can't help but have a hard-on for high fantasy tropes at the same time. So instead of having a grounded show where Littlefinger, Varys, Tyrion, the Tyrells, and the Lannisters are the main figures keeping the show moving with plot as the central focus, he has to keep rooting for his silly Stark clan.

That would all be fine, but the Starks don't work as relatable protagonists to work us into the higher concepts of the series. We go from a plot-driven show with humans being crushed by the cogs of power to a high concept, flat plotted series where we have to have relatable and well-developed protagonists. But we don't get any.

Arya has this encounter with the Faceless Men that could really satisfyingly introduce an interesting plot element, but she is so unlikeable and has such invincible plot armor in a show where almost no one does that it strains imagination. She has no real internal struggle or arc. She never really gives herself over to Faceless Men teachings, and the audience is always waiting for the other shoe to drop for her to go back to Winterfell.

Jon is even worse. He's a plot vehicle to introduce the stuff north of the wall, but he also suffers almost no psychological adversity. He's just best boy all the goddamn time, and even when SUBVERTED EXPECTATIONS kills the best boy, he immediately gets a Christ resurrection. It's fucking stupid.

Bran could introduce us to the 3ER and CotF, but he's such a lifeless actor, and his first major contribution to the plot after six seasons of being fridged to start the plot is to kill one of the few people playing the game of thrones.

tl;dr: GRRM or D&D changed their opinion of what the point of the show is. We can have palace intrigue (plot) or we can have high fantasy (character). But we got neither.

I think D&D are complete hacks and stuff like what they did with Baelish is unforgivable.

However, they never were supposed to write the show, just adapt from GRRMs books. They are not writers, they are terrible. I guarantee when they stated the show absolutely no one involved would have dreamed they would go five years and he still wouldn't have the next book done. But that's what happened and at that point they had to start writing it themselves.

The main fault is GRRM. D&D never wanted or planned on writing the show. This was like the captain telling the stewardess she has to take over flying the plane.

Just going to point out that show Stannis is an inconsistent character and that SUPERIOR BOOK STANNIS never kills his precious daughter, tells the red woman to fuck off when she's wrong, and rules with STEADY JUSTICE.

Book Stannis was one of my favorite characters and is literally a weaker willed man in the show. He allows other people's opinions to sway him, so his actions and regrets are waaaay less impactful.

Now, I'm going to go out on a limb and say Cersei has been 100% consistent across all media, and I'm going to enjoy watching her kill as many people as she can before Jaime stops her.
