Honestly you could probably tear a kids leg off, tie up their knee joint with a t-shirt ot something and make a decent paddle out of it.

Every human being has the biological drive to stay alive. Even in Titanic you can see men not obeying the idea of women and children first. If there was no order i.e. everyone who could get his ass on a lifeboat could do so, men would be punching women left and right to get on one. It's only because personnel stopped them that they couldn't.
