Why is it so common for males to keep watching kid shows way into adulthood?

Reminder that the Prussian "factory" style of education that the first world adopted only recently is all about turning people into gears in a clockwork and actual learning where the wisdom sticks with you needs real interest and understandable reasoning by the teacher. Starting with the mid-80's more and more young kids were fed stories about how staying true to their inner kid would always be magical, special and always better.
It simply worsened as years went by, and those kids grew up in a coveted world where there were no longer real challenge for men to tackle, no more "growing-up" milestones.

Anything worth doing involves hard work. Learning anything -- a language, science, history -- is not fun. It might be interesting, but it's not fun. Playing video games is fun, Watching movies is fun. These are hobbies.

Even Batman The Animated series was a cringe fest. I just don't get how so many adults still watch them.

I prefer to keep duck tails as a cherished childhood memory because I know if I tried to re-watch it (like I've done with others) I'd just end up disappointed.

I agree. '80s cartoon in particular are pretty rough, they were mostly just toy commercials hacked out by writers that were probably barely getting paid for it.

But I can't discount the creativity behind most modern cartoons. OP's image is referencing the recent DuckTales revival, which has writing better than the original by an order of magnitude (although it still pales in comparison to the works of Don Rosa on the Uncle Scrooge comics). Currently watching Samurai Jack with my wife, which is a show I loved as a kid, and watching it as an adult is an entirely different experience because I appreciate the level of conceptual design and atmosphere the show has, which, granted, isn't true for all animation, but still BTFO's the amount of effort put into most "adult" media. Part of my love for cartoons comes from the fact that literally EVERYTHING has to be created from scratch. There's no location scouting or prop department or extras to call in; if you want to show something, YOU have to create it. Even cartoons like Motorcity, which aired on Disney several years ago, while it's clear they're written for kids, there is still a level of intrigue in the writing, and the animation design for that show is absolutely mindblowing. Tron: Uprising and The Last Airbender also come to mind as cartoons I've watched that are an example of good concept and storytelling, regardless of the format.

So my point is that, with some cartoons (mostly ones made after boomers vacated the industry) there is a level of artistry on display that warrants even adult fascination, but yeah, a lot of cartoon-watchers are just manchildren who will sit through 30-year-old toy commercials because "MUH NOSTALGIA".

This doesn't explain why someone would choose cartoons over anime as an adult.
