Will the regular blu ray of the 40th anniversary ed. be an upgrade over the old blu ray?

It should be. The equipment they're using to scan the films is much better and they are doing it in 8k for future proofing since each time they bring these films out they degrade. So they do the best job possible. But I'd say if you have no intention of getting a 4k drive or TV, probably stick with the original.

They want to establish the format, and if you only sold 4k alone, you'd only sell to people who already have the equipment. Bundling the two means people that have a Blu Ray player will be willing to spend a couple bucks more to get the 4k for later. Your television will not last forever, 4k sets are getting cheaper every year, and by the time you need to buy a new TV set you can get a 4k for presumably less than what you paid for your previous TV. I buy the 4k bundles when I can for the right price. Personally I'm hoping the eventual PS5 will have a 4k drive in it, since Sony is a big backer of 4k.
