I feel like it was a huge mis-step to try and tell whatever story they went for with Poe.

I'm sure it sounded great and deep to them on paper but Poe entire fucking character is "ace pilot" and by the end of TLJ all that's changed is Leia put him in charge

you know he's going right back in that X-wing in EPIX for the entire movie. It's what he was created for.
