That more answers the question of why he isn't getting cast for indie films outside Japan though. Because I imagine a lot of people would watch Still Walking and be incredibly impressed. But the performances are just adequate, and it's the same for all Koreeda films, they're not a strong suit. And what Koreeda illicits from Japanese actors is literally the best you ever get in any Japanese film.

Asian "actors" are only capable of playing themselves. American audiences also are just not interested in Asian actors outside of kungfu roles. He never did movies that would attract the west. Kore-eda's movies are essentially indy in west's eyes and thus low potential. Plus he truly began gaining popularity in the past ten, fifteen years or so and primarily in projects that were very Japan market oriented. I'm not saying he's a bad actor. Or that preformances in Koreeda films are bad. He's a good actor. They are in general, quite good. But they aren't great. He's not great. The standard in Japan is low.
