The serial killer allegedly on the phone with Stern is believed to be Russell Ellwood, an almost unheard of serial killer who was suspected of killing over 20 prostitutes in New Orleans. He worked as a cab driver and most of his victims were black prostitutes who were addicted to crack and heroine. He often shot them up with a speedball then would kill them while they were drugged up, sometimes injecting them again and making it look like they OD'd, or in one case after the victim passed out, tossing her into a canal and watching her drown. The police had very little evidence against him(zero physical evidence) and even tried to destroy evidence that placed him in Ohio during one of the killings, FBI criminal profilers later said that they thought there were 4 different active serial killers at work at the same time in the area and that not all of the murders were done by the same guy, but the police handling the task force tried to pin between 20-60 murders on Ellwood, only convicting him on one single count. In the Stern interview, he claims it was 12 victims, and that they were black because of the area he picked them up from. Ellwood in jail prior to trial claimed to have killed over 60. He later died in prison proclaiming his innocence.

I had a penpal at the time whose name I cannot remember from New York as a part of my 7th period religion class (I went to a Catholic high school). She was from Manhattan, and went to a Catholic high school school there. She described the debris falling from the sky as 'a frenzied Satanic snowstorm.' I will never forget that. I remember when the teacher read her letter to the class after asking for my permission.
I flew quite frequently as my father lived in DC Metro area, while my mother lived in Ohio. Baltimore Washington International Airport was no joke. I remember watching a woman crossing a security checkpoint guarded with lasers and cameras. She must have been confused. Within seconds, Marines with weapons drawn descended upon the area. I remember watching one such Marine coolly descending an escalator with his service pistol drawn. Anyway, flying has never been enjoyable after.
I wish I had more to say. There isn't much to say that hasn't already been say. It was a deeply tragic moment that reshaped the world possibly.

There are far fewer now than there used to be. Kemper sitting in an interview and stating "I murdered several women and fucked their corpses, PS there are probably over 100 people like me active in the US right now" was a pretty shocking moment for American law enforcement. The current psychological profile and evidence gathering methods are fairly good at catching people over time, and normal people are more aware that sick fucks are out there and willing to kill you. There are still definitely a few active serial killers, but the level at which they operated in the 1970s and 80s dwarfs the modern-day.

Since i was 20 on that day, people were talking about trying to find the hijackers. They went through the rosters, and of course the one that hit the pentagon gave them an idea of what type of hijackers they were.
