>The most escapist work of cultural production out there I hesitate to call it art — the most escapist thing out there at the moment is The West Wing. This invidious, disgusting program that allows American liberals to think if one of theirs who is well-educated enough, and a good, decent man, gets into power, that he will wring his hands and shed a tear when he orders the bombers over Sudan; this somehow represents an alternative world. This is the most rank, disgusting, reactionary, utopian drivel I have ever seen. And I would defend Tolkien over it a thousand times. But with their categories they can’t understand that as escapist; in fact they think it’s tremendously political.

>I shit on the United States

okay this is based. it is a good point though, all of this capeshit garbage is a very american phenomenon, super hero movies are the america of cinema

Imagine a bunch of 19-50 year men back in the 80's turning up in droves to watch the goonies. That's what it's like nowadays. Something went wrong

It’s not like you dumb butt fuckers would be discussing anything better if all the superhero movie posting suddenly vanished.

SHOCKINGLY BASED AND UNAPOLOGETICALLY REDPILLED

I sincerely love these depictions

Truly it’s the tripcodes who always are the most bizarre

They were just watching shitty horror flicks instead of capeshit

at least most of those were rated R. Made for adults. Now they're watching kids movies.

>r rating means it's adult

Films are for entertainment, not for pretending you're cultured, idiots. Read a book.

OP on suicide watch

Cope capeshitter

OH NO NO NO NO

Shitty horror flicks >>>>>>> capeshit, delusional manchild

It's true, capeshit is for at most 21 year olds. If you still ''love'' capeshit after that, then you have shit taste.

Simon Pegg is the Vegeta of Yea Forums

It's allso disgusting. Everyone is drooling like an idiot for the latest Marvel piece of shit.
Makes me sick to my stomach.

I wish I could’ve punched Alec Guinness in his pretentious old man face. Fuck that guy.

The average age here is at most 19 years old. Do you honestly believe you’re arguing with 30+ year olds when you come to a board like Yea Forums?

so many capeshitters on this board it's sad.

I blame George Lucas for creating this entire generation of pathetic literal manchildren.

If you read the context behind this, it's actually pretty insightful about how our generation grew up compared to those growing up during and immediately after WWII

simonpegg.net/2015/05/19/big-mouth-strikes-again/

"One of the things that inspired Jessica and myself, all those years ago, was the unprecedented extension our generation was granted to its youth, in contrast to the previous generation, who seemed to adopt a received notion of maturity at lot sooner. The children of the 70s and 80s were the first generation, for whom it wasn’t imperative to ‘grow up’ immediately after leaving school. Why this happened is a whole other sociological discussion: a rise in the student population, progress in gender equality, the absence of world war; all these things and more contributed to this social evolution. What fascinated Jess and I was the way we utilised this time. For Tim and Daisy, not having to grow up in the way their parents did, simply meant a continuation of their childhood. For Daisy, it was the pursuit of her girlhood dreams and fantasies. For Tim, he channeled his childhood passions into his adult life, cared about them as much, invested in them, the same level of time, importance and emotion. His hobbies and interests defined who he was, rather than his professional status.

In the 18 years since we wrote Spaced, this extended adolescence has been cannily co-opted by market forces, who have identified this relatively new demographic as an incredibly lucrative wellspring of consumerist potential. Suddenly, here was an entire generation crying out for an evolved version of the things they were consuming as children. This demographic is now well and truly serviced in all facets of entertainment and the first and second childhoods have merged into a mainstream phenomenon."

Pfft. I was born in 1982 which makes me ancient by Yea Forums standards. I always thought Star Wars was crap outside of Empire. I was all about 70s/80s Spielberg as a kid.

Superhero movies pretty much are all about 9/11 i would be surprised if people outside of usa gave a shit

There were several highly successful superhero franchises prior to 9/11. The concept of a cinematic universe is definitely a 2000s thing though.

Prior to 2000 the franchises were about the atomic bomb where all the villains were famous intelligent people who leveraged mysterious technology to make doomsday devices and all that jazz. Superhero shit is always just lowest common denominator stuff where america saves the day from whoever the big bad guy is at the time.

>be William Friedkin
>become world famous as the director of The Exorcist
>decide your follow up film should be called Sorcerer despite the title being obviously misleading to audiences
Sorcerer is an okay movie but come on. He brought it on himself.

I genuinely don’t see the difference between what you’re describing and what modern day superhero movies are. I really don’t think 9/11 is a factor anymore.

good read

holy shit based and sneedpilled

Nah. I’d say Tim Burton’s Batman pretty much created the template for all superhero movies that followed. Yeah, Richard Donner’s Superman had been a hit but Batman 1989 was the one that really cemented the concept of giant marketing budgets and multiple tie-in products, fast food promotions, etc.

I hate the faggot that keeps posting this.

we all do

Pegg and Jodorowsky are just salty nerds didn't like their shit trekkie movie and stupid ass comic the rest are valid opinions though

Whar do these people want? Let us say capshit dies tonight. None are made ever again and people grow bored of it to boot. What fills the vacuum? I am really curious as to what comes next. I remember when movies like catwoman and daredevil were seen as stupid and unworthy of watching. The hulk and ghost rider seen as much the same. Xmen and spiderman were the quality super hero flicks. Now there are so many all of about the same quality, mixed together into series. I guess chinese or indian movies become more popular? Maybe films that make people feel guilty or wrathful towards chosen out groups? Interactive vr sims instead of cinema? Nothing?

Jodorowsky Is fucking awesome.

More like American superhero films became exponentially more popular in China and India.

Ok, so no end in the foreseeable future. I imagine those nations work out lucrative contracts with disney and warner to make their own. The marvel and dc universes are barely tapped at this point.

but anime is fucking autistic

Then don't watch autistic anime

fucking manchildren

i blame star wars for this capeshit phenomenon, quips, black and white conflict, characters with no depth and overexposure of special effects, it was quite influential in the development of the capeshit genre so fuck star wars (the original trilogy)

pretty outdated list there bruh, shit was made in like 2011

>it's all the same style

Like I said, stop watching autistic anime

Sorcerer was fucking mediocre and the epitome of what a flick-version of Wages of Fear could be. Just because it's edgy doesn't mean it's good. The original was much better.

He's not even saying capeshit is bad here per se, instead he's saying the marketing forces have taken over and totally co-opted it.

At first I thought the Yea Forums shitposter manbabby was the guys fetishised sex slave kept in a cage next to his bed and forced to wear diapers.

It isn't like the "adult" forms of media this generation are any less cancerous.
