it's incredible how there's no dead weight in this movie. Every scene, every exchange is moving things along. Some of my favorite analyses were:

Yeah, I read the Mary Sue article. Born sexy yesterday refers to a character like Leeloo from The Fifth Element, doesn't fit Alita at all.

The other accusations are "submissive robot girl" and "lovebot." Alita isn't submissive by any stretch, she's self-motivated the whole way through, from investigating Ido in the beginning to learning about her past. She decided to make Hugo's goal of reaching Zalem her own goal, but even at that point she's the one driving the action and he follows along.

It's true she falls for the first male character she meets after Ido, but running time is precious in the movie. The pace of their relationship is believable for teenage love. She's nothing like the Futurama robot mentioned in the article.

The Common Sense Media article just says Alita is "sexualized in a disturbing way." She's less sexualized than almost any female action hero I can think of.

The only way you can accuse Alita of this stuff is to use blatant double standards that apply to tons of other female characters that aren't considered "problematic."

The bar isn't exactly very high, especially considering Dark Knight was released in 2008 and the last Batman films before Nolan's trilogy had been Batman Forever and Batman and Robin. It was pretty exceptional for its time and it kinda saved Batman movies from widespread ridicule.

Also the film paints her intentionally as naive with her bar speech and the heart scene. We're meant to love her esrnestnest but understand that it's a flaw. The film doesn't say that this is the correct course of action as a whole. JFC why are reviewers such brainlets this isn't even hard analysis

Oh right, the new generation of film critics believe that you can't show a character making mistakes and rely on the audience to understand why it was a mistake. Protagonists have to do the right thing 100% of the time and showing a character with flaws means you want people to imitate those flaws.

Yeah, a completely normal work-a-day woman who gets her world turned upside down and reacts like a normal human being would - no we can't have that!
