IMO The producers were undoubtedly pissed that they might have had to write AJ out of the show. So they punished him by making him a constant punchline.
The show was foreshadowing that AJ was going to be just like Tony (even having the panic attacks), then they just made him a constant failure with his laughable suicide and fail hit on Uncle Junior.
