Currently watching Dreyer's Day of Wrath on the Criterion Channel - pretty fucking good so far

Nice. I'm looking at Edward Yang again, gonna tackle A Brighter Summer Day this weekend, it's been years since I last saw it.

all art is bad

this post is art

Yi Yi is my favorite by him but A Brighter Summer is close behind. I only have A Confucian Confusion, That Day on the Beach and Mahjong left to watch in order to complete his filmography

KINOGRAPHY YOU MUST WATCH BEFORE POSTING HERE
1 L'ascension du chevalier noir (2012, Nolan)
2 Hiding From McGee (1929, Voitto)
3 L'empathie sur une tache de naissance (1959, Raleigh)
4 Sommaren med Monika (1953, Bergman)
5 Ostre sledované vlaky (1966, Menzel)
6 Adolessensie Morbiede (1978, Dietrich)
7 The Fascination of Steven Wright (1932, Hólmgeirr)
8 ₩AR (1959, Bardas)
9 Яpocть (2013, Boll)
10 โรงแรมนรก (1957, Pestonji)

Same. Yi Yi's my favourite, but I figured that i'd give ABSD another shot because it's just such huge film - not just its length, but the plot, 100+ speaking roles, the pacing etc. - I couldn't soak everything up on my first watch.

This thread has been up for a month (quite a few bump posts though) but the interested user can keep an eye on this thread and post in it when Yea Forums gets too shitty.

>on Yea Forums while watching a film
God you're pathetic. Kys zoomer

My bad, I wasn't aware about that, Yea Forums's far quicker than /qa/, so i'll post the link in the next OP

So far I've watched these out of Billy Wilder's filmography:
>Sunset Boulevard
>Some Like It Hot
>Witness for the Prosecution
>The Apartment
>Double Indemnity
And that's how I'd rank them from the ones I personally enjoyed most to least. Sunset Boulevard was unbelievably good and has become one of my top favourite films. Some Like It Hot was also very enjoyable for me. The others I unfortunately didn't enjoy all that much. I think I might like The Apartment more if I give it another watch but my main problem was the characters, and one of the main reasons I loved Sunset Boulevard so much was also the characters. Any recommendations out of his films I might enjoy more than the rest? Because if they feel more like the ones lower on the list I might not continue with him for much longer.

His dialogue is great but if I don't find the characters that deliver the lines interesting then they don't have as much impact.

I'd also appreciate recommendations from other filmmakers. The main thing to base it on would be my love of Sunset Boulevard. I've been watching more Gloria Swanson films and I find her absolutely enchanting. I've seen All About Eve which is similar to SB and while I did like it, I'm not sure it was for the same reasons.

Recently watched THE PASSION OF ANNA by I. Bergman. Been watching his films in order of release. Love watching Liv Ullman, von Sydow, and Bibi Andersson age with each passing collaboration. Not my favorite Bergman - the narrative structure was jarring and climax felt unwarranted - but still an entertaining watch.

Another film I recently saw was LET THE CORPSES TAN. Loved it. Sparse on story, heavy on style. A French version of a spaghetti western. Plus Elina Löwenson will forever be a cutie.

watched the great beauty on the criterion site last night. movie was trash but the site is great

Why no love for Sorrentino? La Grande Bellezza was a fantastic portrayal of modern decadent Italy. Now Youth was kinda shite, apart from the hilarious Maradona sequences. Not this one. This one was pretty fucking great.

how much a month is the criterion channel, I cant seem to get it to load atm

movie looked and sounded great but felt like nothing more than thematic lip service. maybe i lost something in the subtitles. calling it trash is dramatic tho because it is definitely a visual triumph

im gonna start going thru the film noir stuff criterion has on the front page rn

Looking forward to High Life. I've only seen roughly one or two good movies a year at the cinema for the last three years now. Our Lord cannot come too soon.

>criterion not available in your region
being a europoor sucks

its getting a lot of praise from people i dont trust which is a bit of a red flag but i still have high hopes

Criterion channel kind of sucks, they barely have any Bunuel even tho they’ve done more releases. They’ve done a release of The Milky Way that now costs like 90$ on Amazon, and that’s the only edition that looks halfway decent. They should also do a release of Nazarin since every version available looks like ass. Love their Mizoguchi collection tho

i wish they would do kubrick's 2001

Wish Wojciech Has got more love on Yea Forums, his films are just as good as any of the other greats. I’d recommend The Saragossa Manuscript
>As the Napoleonic Wars rage across Europe, two officers from opposing armies meet by chance in Saragossa, Spain, where they're mutually bewitched by a book they find. It recounts the story of Alfonso van Worden (Zbigniew Cybulski), a Walloon Guard captain, trying to reach Madrid via the Sierra Moreno Mountains. There, he is at every turn thwarted by concupiscent princesses (Iga Cembrzynska-Kondrati, Joanna Jedryka), a cunning hermit (Kazimierz Opalinski) and an unrelenting Spanish Inquisition.
And The Hourglass Sanatorium
>Józef visits his dying father at a remote mental institution, where time itself doesn't seem to exist, and the line between dreams and memories becomes indistinguishable.

is there a way to watch Criterion online?

$10 for something they messed up on as far as PC watching goes. The apps apparently work great.

CriterionChannel
Right now you can do a 14 day trial. AFAIK Euros don't get it, or maybe only some Euros, I'm honestly not sure. I can vouch the Fire Stick app is fantastic quality streaming. My PC viewing had bitrate/artifacting issues until it warmed up, which took a bit, but it was still vaguely there (mostly noticeable in extremely dark scenes). I don't use Roku but I've got a friend that says it's great on there. Basically just sign up, cancel immediately and see if you enjoy it. The interface is garbage for browsing and discovery. I've taken to just typing in words and seeing what I can get. "Czech" got me the best Czech new wave, "Love" got me basically what you'd think. I read and article that says they're not even close to the library they want and the bigger picture studio kino that exists should be there by the end of the month, including more Janus/Criterion.

Watched los santos innocentes (1984) the other day, usually regarded as one of the best Spainish films: K I N O
>In 1960s Spain, Paco (Alfredo Landa), his wife, Régula (Terele Pavez), and his brother-in-law Azarias (Francisco Rabal) work for slave wages on a large plantation. Paco, a brilliant hunter, tries to use his skills to win over his heartless employers, but his talents earn him little respect. Meanwhile, after the aging Azarias loses his job, he is forced to move in with the Paco, Régula and their three kids, which further complicates the lives of this impoverished family.
