New IP, manga adaptation, full CGI protagonist in live action, cyberpunk setting, no big stars. How much earnings would you expect from a movie like that? It managed to eclipse all those competitors, most of them based on existing IPs with nostalgia value and Disney's prestige behind them.
Disney is heading into another 70s-style dark age, only we're not going to get anything cool like the Black Cauldron out of it.

I'll just be completely honest, I enjoyed Ready Player One, for reasons much different than Alita. It felt like a classic Spielberg adventure story, and lots of the action is spectacular. It's a fun underdog story that understands what the audiences want to see, without being condescending. It feels more genuine than other blockbusters of it's nature.

I pretty much hated RP1 the first time I saw it. Then watched it again and realized it wasn't really that bad. Then watched it a 3rd time and decided that it's got some problems but they didn't get in the way of enjoying it. The book is... not so good. A lot of what made the movie more impactful is spelled out in like the first chapter and I basically put the book down after that.

Swallowing Fox is actually going to fuck them over in the long run. Disney's investors are going to expect them to do something productive with all the IPs they've grabbed, but their shitty management style will just drive the things they've acquired into the ground.
Nostalgia has been milked completely dry over the last 15 years, look at stuff like the new Predator movie. This era in pop culture has so little identity beyond "hey, remember that thing?" From this point, succeeding in the media is going to depend on finding a new thing that's popular, and Disney has put themselves in the worst position to do that with their huge collection of legacy IPs.
Even if Disney identifies a rising trend, their investors will tell them not to take risks riding it when they have so much legacy stuff that's proven. They'll die the same way Kodak did, who pioneered digital cameras but didn't develop them because it would cut into their film business.

I hate the fans of the movie that tell others to not think too much about the script. "Just enjoy it as an action movie!" as like some way of getting them to watch it. To me, that's such a disservice to how detailed and comprehensive the screenplay is, you can pick out a new detail every second. Sets up and pay offs are all over the film, double meanings, and Cameron loves his symbolism. Fuck the fans who treat the film as anything lesser than of perfection.
