because you have to go through life being a flaky person with a squishy, loose sense of who you are, so that you can effectively pretend to be someone you're not and channel convincing emotions through that identity. Otherwise, you wouldn't be a good actor. The luckiest are probably the great character actors. People like Jack Nicholson or legit movie stars that basically play themselves in every film. They're coddled, delusional retards, but they're probably less legitimately troubled. At the end of the spectrum you have porn "actors" who are just completely cut off from their own emotions, which incidentally is why they're almost universally terrible at real acting, even the ones who are supposedly professional, "serious", and intelligent enough to be taught acting. If you don't have access to your emotions, you still can't act.

It's not an actor thing. It's a women thing.

to be fair, most of that shit makes you somewhat neurotic and even bitter, but not straight-up mental. The mental part comes from the emotional and identity issues that acting becomes an outlet/adjunct to and which you may never deal with if you actually make it as an actor. It's not a fait accompli, but it's probably why there are a lot of mentally ill actors. The craft attracts a specific kind of nutter then actively encourages them to never deal with their nuttery.
