Screenwriting thread

I’m having writer’s block with a plot point in my script. I’m looking for the cartel to have something important taken from them that’s not money, hostages or drugs that a cartel would need to or really want to take back. Any ideas?

They don't, they use radio and and cycle through several layers of burners and satellite phones. Chapo was caught the first time cause one of his associates got killed by the marines and his satellite number was on the dead guy's phone, before that they couldn't get through all the layers of phones and couriers that handled the messages before he received them, the second time he got caught cause of the idiot kept using the same BBM account on blackberry burners.

Jeez, that one producer user was probably right. He said if the first page of the script doesn't draws him in, he'll move on to another script and he had to go through at least 300 screenplays on a slow week. Makes you wonder if its worth the time to submit a screenplay without any inside connections.

All you have to do is read the first pages of the scripts of monster hits in the same genre as your script that were released in the last few years.

Recognize the similarities that each of the scripts have on the first page, and incorporate those similarities into the first few pages of your own script. If the game is rigged, you have to cheat.

A friend of a friend who wanted to do what you were doing actually travelled down to Mexico in 2011 or 2012 to "experience the reality" before he began writing. Needless to say, the guy didn't come back from Mexico.

if you don't even live there, you better find a different premise, or it will inevitably result in some cringey, formulaic, retarded bullshit. imagine a mafia in your own city or something

God I hope this happens

Currently writing a screenplay about a WW1 veteran who returns home with PTSD and becomes a street cop in California during the prohibition era as he tries to deal with his family life and what happened in the war.
I had it shelved for a while to work on other scripts, but after watching The Highwaymen I've been motivated to keep writing and see where it goes. Really trying to capture that late 20s feel right before everything went to shit

their childhood sled

It really does sound interesting, but studios are all about marketing. Doesn't matter if it's the best script ever written in human history. If it can't be marketed, they won't even read it.

And the sad fact is, WW1 and the 1920s just doesn't sell. Not domestically, and especially not internationally.

And this is why you don't go through the dying distribution system and why most directors end up writing themselves.

sound interesting desu

I first started working on it back in 2014 when Mad Men and The Great Gatsby came out. I noticed that everybody was ordering old fashioneds at the bar I used to bounce for, and that same bar threw a "black tie" party shortly after Gatsby got popular.
After that I was talking to a buddy of mine who did marketing relations and he said that the two things that young audiences identifies strongly with are nostalgia and a flawed but relatable main character.
Since then I've tried to spin the vision I've had into something that both movie buffs and the casual twentysomething viewer can enjoy. That is, if I could actually finish the first fucking draft...

>Always fascinated with Alien and Ridley Scott
>Decide to emulate my hero by writing a screenplay in the same genre
>Finally finished writing in 2014, after 2 long years
>Waited till the end to choose a title; Sentience
>This was a hobby of mine alongside studies and not a job. So I had no idea what to do with the script
>Uhh, I guess I'll just mail it to every talent agency and studio and wait to hear back
>Hear nothing. Not a fucking peep
>Fast forward 16 months
>Find out a movie named "Life" was being produced, and the plot seemed to be similar to mine
>Oh well, I guess there are tons of scripts about space flowing through Hollywood
>Fast forward another year or so
>Trailer for Life is out. Let's check it out
>Starting to notice scenes and lines that were delivered exactly as I had written them
>Start thinking they decided to steal my idea and write their own script while good parts from my script
>Fast forward another few months till release date
>As I sit in the cinema, I notice that 95% of the film goes exactly as my script was written. They didn't just steal my idea and make their own. They just outright took my script and changed the title
>Start sending e-mails to the studio, the production company and even the media. No response
>Contact an attorney
>Studio starts responding
>Attorney says they're offering $30,000 in compensation, but I'd have to sign a NDA
>Say no
>Studio stops responding. Legal fees piling up. Told that the studio will do everything they can to rack my legal fees up to millions of dollars if we go to court, just to make an example out of me to others

Kek I'm still waiting to see if Bill & Ted 3 is anything like the one I wrote in college. It practically writes itself sure, but I want to see if they even tried integrating the time jumps from Bogus Journey.

Deleted the post since I wouldn't be surprised if those faggots would slap me with a lawsuit and ruin my life.

Fuck Hollywood, though. If you're a nobody and you deliver a good script to their frontdoor, nothing stops from them stealing it.

Attached: 1534600638725.jpg (1920x796, 195K)

I guess it's kinda cool that you basically wrote a major hollywood production, at least. How did your friends/family react to this? Did they believe you? Also, are you still writing?

Used to be you could bang out an amazing script and hold it hostage so you jump the director line but there's too many crooks these days.

I'm trying to money ball a 7 minute trailer and then go for crowdfunding.

I showed the script to my family long before the movie came out, so they believed me. So did most friends. I haven't written a single fucking page since then. If I write another good script, it'll just end up making another studio rich, and I'll just have to settle for a measly $30k compensation and zero credit. Fuck that.

sounds interesting, you could incorporate a lot of themes with being a street cop at the time and also being involved in WWI, some things include
>nothing changing for the better
>balance of power preserved but at a cost
I feel like there's a way of translating that into the guy's life, my only thing is that I know most WWI vets that had ptsd never really re-integrated into society or got jobs, so you might need to add that he had a connection in police force or something.

what's the movie you wrote didn't see the post before you deleted it

I wonder how strong a case could be made against you just for bringing it up? I could easily see this becoming a hugely reported story with a bunch of support if it was posted as a sob story on reddit with evidence or something. But I guess you don't think it's worth the risk. How angry about it are you still? I'm interested in how people get over things like this without getting seething with rage every day.

There is a Jewish story, an ordinary Jewish Joke. It runs like this: A father was teaching his little son to be less afraid, to have more courage, by having him jump down the stairs. He placed his boy on the second stair and said, “Jump, and I’ll catch you.” and the boy jumped. Then the father placed him on the third stair, saying “Jump, and I”ll catch you.” Though the boy was afraid, he trusted his father, did what he was told, and jumped into his father’s arms. Then the father put him on the next step, and the next step, each time telling him, Jump, and I’ll catch you, and each time the boy jumped and was caught by his father. And so this went on. Then the boy jumped from a very high step, just as before; but this time the father stepped back, and the boy fell flat on his face. As he picked himself up, bleeding and crying, the father said, “that will teach you: never trust a Jew, even if it’s your own father.”

After several months of development, the project was making genuine progress. Then one day, an amateur sends him an email containing her outline for a spinoff of that franchise, asking him to help her sell it.

My friend backed away in horror, but the damage was done…

He had received this woman’s email. Therefore she could prove that he’d had access to her material. She could claim that he had ripped off elements in her material.

The final memoir of Ambrose Bierce before he disappeared

a tale as old as time, in case anyone is wondering why moderately successful - but easily ruinable - professionals -in lots of different industries- are often so aloof and guarded with randos, upstarts, and fans. FWIW, usually the first or second answer in a FAQ for new writers involves reassuring them that "no, nobody is going to steal your shit". This is for some reason a common fear amongst writers. In truth, the publishers and studios have far more to lose and if they really wanted to steal somebody's book or script, reworking it just enough to pass would be relatively light work.

>If you're a nobody and you deliver a good script to their frontdoor, nothing stops from them stealing it.
get an agent lmao like wtf
t. 21 yo screenwriter desperately looking for agent

yet they stole this guy's script and offered him 30k to shut up. if he did go further he would not be able to stand up to their army of lawyers.

ok. this is going to the object of desire of the protagonist, and what triggers the antagonist?
is a classic story?
Sometimes i feel more confortable writing two simple lines with this three things:
protagonist, antagonist, object of desire.
Perhaps it could help to write a biography of both protagonist or antagonist. once you see their past, the rest will flow.

This question is too vague. What kind of film are you going for? Some wacky lol so random circumstance that snowballs into a serious problem like a Tarantino film? Slow burn thriller with a side of conspiracy thrown in? Take it from someone who does writing for a living, if you haven’t established what type of story you want the powers that be won’t be interested no matter how entertaining it actually is

Exactly

I have some stories that are mostly fleshed out but I'm writing by myself and I know that the stories would improve if I had someone to bounce ideas off of and collaborate with. I live in the middle of nowhere so there's a slim chance at finding a like-minded writer here, and finding one online seems like a risk - I'd probably end up with a Hollywood Juden on the other end waiting to steal my ideas.

are there any strictly non-Jewish production companies? I would imagine Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, and China might have a scoundrel-free production company, but then you'd have to cater a script for the Asian market.

Nobody prints scripts anymore lmao this image is probably fake. That being said, yes, the competition is high and we probably have a couple hundred scripts in our backlog.

t. works at a production company

nice larp

To tack onto my initial comment I mostly do horror stuff. I’ve done a couple different dramas but I like staying within horror stuff; while trying to stay away from stuff that’ll get compared to Stephen King.

Current work is a werewolf story that revolves around a group of people going missing before a search party goes looking for them. Long story short it turns out the forest the story takes place in got fucked up by Native Americans doing rituals which transformed them into werewolves in order to beat out warring tribes. My only caveat is that this would end with an obvious sequel bait tease in mind, what’s a way that wouldn’t piss everyone on Yea Forums I’m trying to Jew my way into a niche horror series?

...and people go into supermarkets and slip and fall all the time. Often its just easier to pay them to go away unless there is a pattern. It's a set amount and probably accounted for up to a point. Litigating it is quite another matter though, hence why they go from perfectly casual about paying him to "we will legally bury you" in a heartbeat. They have no time for this kind of bullshit. They don't even want to know if they're actually at fault due to one of their writers actually stealing it. They don't care.

It's a non issue because the fundamental problem is that aspiring authors are far too precious about their ideas. Ideas are a dime a dozen. Everybody has them. That's why the "Idea Guy" is literally a meme. I'm not a lawyer, but if you can prove that they stole specific lines of dialogue, literal plagiarism, then maybe you have something, but this idea guy bullshit aint that and it sounds like the studio knew it.

Put random stuff out online on forums and the like and get feedback. Don’t actually partner with anyone your suspicions would be correct. Hollywood is an ugly mistress, people have done worse to get less out of it

CROATOAN.

look up the Roanoke colony if you need more info.

Got a few pretty vague ideas I want to work through.
A slow-burn thriller set during the Lebanese Civil War
A semi-realistic alien first contact scenario. Sort of like the first 30 minutes of Arrival. I want it to be a sort anxiety horror kind of thing.
A sort of Raid-inspired action conspiracy movie. I want this to be a lean, fast-paced romp.
And finally, my cringepilled passion project. A dark comedy based on the life of my female friend.

>female friend

Look at this smartie pants’d lad, the story takes place in North Carolina, Roanoke gets directly mentioned by one of the characters

what I meant, is, that it doesn't matter what it is, what it matters is the significance to the protagonist and the antagonist.
sorry for my english, and from a poor country and i'm drunk. lol

one thing to keep in mind: a lot of people think that the Roanoke colony decided to abandoned their shitty life in the colony and merge with the natives. I strongly believe this is the truth. I also think that there could have been more direct evidence of their defection which would have been destroyed by whoever found their colony, so the idea of joining the natives wouldn't spread to others. You could go many different ways with their fate - that they joined the natives to become werewolves themselves, that they alliance with the natives was a double-cross to lure them into unprotected land, that they were transformed into something other than werewolves by the other native group which used that ritual in response to the werewolves, etc.

Obviously if you have a solid outline for the sequel in mind then you could put some heavy foreshadowing for the first script.

It sure is interesting what you can find on the archive

It’s hinted at what happens to them but I keep prior history mostly left up to the viewers (or readers in this case). I have a terrible habit of getting so caught up in lore I end up writing confusingly long backstory so I leave it vague.

At the cost of sounding cliche the story would end off with the effects of the curse being put on someone. The sequel would be completely different then this one in concept, the idea is to go from jaws to a more body horror psychological horror type if that makes any sense.

This series was Great.

To be clear I more so am writing a continuation because there’s ideas I didn’t get to use in my original script that I wanted to go more in depth with in future installments. It’s not a case of me just wanting to make more money as nice as it would be. One of my biggest problems is the cash grab ending so I’m trying to stay away from that and give a homey ending just for the sake of leaving things open. There’s a couple unresolved plot threads that would get answered eventually but still wrap up the story it could be self contained too

That makes a lot of sense. And I know what you mean about getting lost in the details. I was spending weeks trying to research the estimated future geopolitical landscape in regards to which nations, corporations, ethnostates, religious groups, etc would have their own space colonies. In the end I decided to roll it back, forego the elaboration, and focus on the main group in the story.

And I like what you're doing with the continuation of the story. I'm stoked on your behalf, you have a lot of options on where you can take the story. Good luck once again.

4chanX only works with Chrome/Chromium now. The Firefox extension hasn't worked in like six months. For some, that's a dealbreaker.

This is the kinda shit that kills my interest in devoting time to screenwriting. They say they only accept the top 0.01% of scripts and yet Hollywood shits out garbage after garbage movie. It is all about connections and marketing. Sure, there are people with talent, skill, and hardwork... but this means nothing if you don't know the right people.

I'm writing a script about a guy who's abuse of his "abilities" causes him to develop split personalities and ruin his life, in the end he learns to love himself and gain self confidence without hiding behind a facade.

Shit or nah, obviously leaving out alot of important details so my USP isn't stolen.

>hitman defrauds street gang he works for to pay for medical treatments from his time in Iraq, befriends a teenage gang member and shows him a life outside the streets before an ambiguous ending where the hitman is being hunted down by both the gang and a detective who has also served in Iraq, leaving all the money to the kid to start a new life

>A young Norwegian man finally asks out his childhood crush, but is forced to leave after his first date and mobilize in the army after Germany invades. The movie follows him and his unit as they are forced to retreat, but slowly regain the initiative against all odds in the freezing Arctic, culminating in the Battle of Narvik. The man returns to find his house destroyed in the fighting and ends with him standing over the body of his dead girlfriend.

>A young Nigeren police officer gets an assignment in the town of Agadez- the human trafficking capital of the world. Upon arrival he gets assigned to the mismanaged missing persons section due to his inexperience. As he investigates these dissapearances he quickly becomes wrapped up in corruption and conspiracy and must decide how far he is willing to go to act morally and preserve justice.

A boy falls in love with a girl.

Unable to confess, he is gifted by a deus ex machina with the girl's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on him as well.

But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is the girl's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.

Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of LOVE.

>In the deep South, a teenage girl flees from her neglectful mother and abusive stepfather and is welcomed by a travelling family led by Pa, his wheelchair-bound, mute-deaf wife and their two young adult children. What initially appears to be the family the teenage girl has always dreamed of soon turns into a nightmare when she realizes that Pa is a psychotic bank robber, his wife is actually his sister whom he kidnapped and mutilated, and his children are teenage strays much like our protagonist, whom he subjects to physical, psychological and sexual torture. Although the protagonist manages to keep Pa at bay by claiming to have an STD, she is kept as a maid, horribly mistreated not only by Pa but by the rest of the "family". The teenage girl complies out of fear for her life, but when Pa brings home a little 10-year-old girl, the daughter of a couple Pa has recently murdered, to be the newest member of the "family", the teen girl takes action to rescue the little girl from the nightmarish life that awaits her.

Been working on this for a while, mostly for fun.

>my laptop broke

What's up with it? It might just be a meme issue that's easily fixable.

Classified documents would probably be your best bet then. Proof of outright corruption would probably draw the wrath of funkytown if you took it from the cartel

I just bullshitted a throwback to schlocky 80's R-rated action/horror flicks about a military unit sent to dismantle a drug cartel in Mexico only to square off against a mystery man supplying the cartel who turns out to be the Devil himself.

This sounds awesome, I hope you’re going all out on the torture aspect (besides sexual of course so you can get it made). Make it really satisfying when she fucks his day up.

*the devil has a striking resemblance to Danny Trejo*

A lot of it has been done by Colombian television... or it seems like it. Watch some Colombian Telenovelas about narcos, they may give you good ideas and more understanding.

I am Colombian.

I used to write screenplays but now I mostly write for the stage. Here are a few things I’m kicking around right now.

>The last survivors of a mutiny on a massive multigenerational starship make it to an escape pod just in time. It’s the captain, his daughter, a crewman, a marine, and a scientist. Their mission was to investigate a mysterious signal in space but they have been drifting towards for a long time. Our characters learn the captain and countless past captains have been lying to them. They are thousands of generations into the mission, contact with earth was lost long ago. That’s why the mutiny happened. So they tie up the captain but agree to continue their mission because the “escape pod” is still locked on course for the signal and can’t be changed. After some time, with food and cigarettes running short, the marine snaps after witnessing the growing relationship between the daughter and the crewman. He executes the captain and the scientist, binds the crewman, starts raping the daughter and abusing morphine. He argues that the mission is futile so he might as well enjoy the last few weeks of his life. Eventually once they run out of cigarettes he uses all but two bullets of the gun on the captains corpse, unties everyone and kills himself. The daughter and crewman have some relationship trouble but when she discovers she is pregnant the crewman gets over it. He strives to care for their child and continue their work and the mission. The daughter reveals she feels the marine was right and they are going to die soon and the mission is worthless, might as well spend their last time together in love and not care about the baby. The crewman gets upset and disavows her, sitting down at the computer to work. The daughter takes the gun and kills herself leaving him to type away at nothing.

I'm in a creative writing class at an art school and I'm critiquing somebody's thesis which is a full length screenplay that is so fucking terrible after I graduate I will upload it here.

It’s called a MacGuffin and it’s pretty much always been a thing in storytelling.

A screenwriter who often worked with Alfred Hitchcock came up with a word for it and that’s what we’ve called it since the 1930s. Probably the most well known example of a MacGuffin from modern times would be the briefcase in Pulp Fiction. The plot of the entire movie centers around that briefcase. We never find out what’s in it and it doesn’t matter because the movie’s great. That’s what a MacGuffin is. It’s a random little anything used by a storyteller to move a plot forward. Other examples from movies would be The Maltese Falcon in The Maltese Falcon or the monolith in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Sometimes you find out more about the MacGuffin. Sometimes not.

>In the 1880s old west a loner young man returns to his family ranch after a day out in the woods. His family is already eating dinner and have not set a place for him. They are surprised and upset to see him. They tell him to leave because people are looking for him for what he did. He is confused and realizing they aren’t joking gets upset, causing a shouting match. His father becomes angry and tells him how dare he enter his home after what he did, his mother goes into hysterics. His older brother says he always knew what he was. A posse shows up to arrest or kill him and his mother pleads with them just to arrest him, they do so.

>In jail he is tormented by deputies who taunt and torture him. One deputy though is terrified of him. He says he sees nothing but the devil in him.

>At the trial he is declared guilty in less than 5 minutes and sentenced to hang. His mother weeps and his father stands stoically.

>That night, the day before the hanging, the sheriff talks with the protagonist about how to behave on the gallows and how to give a good show for the audience. A lynch mob arrives and demands the protagonist be turned over to be hanged by them. The sheriff gets up to hold them off and reason with them but leaves the keys near the cell. Realizing he is doomed the protagonist reaches for the keys, unlocks himself and finds the sheriffs pistol on his desk. He steels himself and shoots the sheriff in the back of the head. Gunfire from the crowd erupts and he uses the sheriff as a shield. The crowd rushes in and he manages to kill several of them before escaping.

>back on the family ranch the protagonist bursts through the door and tells his father and brother to grab their guns and get ready for a fight. They tell him to get out and they will not help him. He argues that they are family and he didn’t do anything. The father gets frustrated and grabs his rifle, threatening to kill his son.

Protag kills his father. Brother draws but protag shoots him in the stomach then executes him. His mother cries and begs and yells at him to get out. He shoots her. Then goes upstairs and kills his young siblings. Then just leaves.

Another play now:
>An alcoholic coke head bus boy at a 24 dive bar on graveyard shift. A series of vignettes in the alley where he has his smoke breaks. He and his coworkers fuck around, unload trucks, talk to homeless people, drink and do drugs in this alley. He and his main coworker share a birthday. There’s a homeless street musician named Pops who is their friend. Also a homeless guy named rick, who looks just like Pops and he calls the boys nephew while they call him uncle (also called “not-pops”). Homeless lady they call Mama. Gradual increase in substance abuse culminating in the protag dealing with a dead homeless guy in the alley. The cops smell the guys thermos and almost puke, then leave. Our protagonist begins talking to the dead guy and then drinks from his thermos, shrugs, and chugs the rest.

Set in a seedy bar after hours. Our main characters share a name. One is the bartender, the other a dirtbag friend. They are being paid a large amount of coke by the owner of the bar, a small time gangster, to wait for a guy to show up across the street and kidnap him. What follows is a descent into mania as they drink and do coke and deal with confusion as to the identity of their mark and strange things happening (they find a dead bird, occult symbols, etc). Eventually we get some surreal body horror with a strange insect emerging from someone’s arm. The guy they kidnapped is murdered by a mysterious force. Still working on some details here but the bartenders friend is eventually forced to kill the bartender as they drink even more. Then a mysterious man shows up behind the bar and offers him a drink. It’s like a blend of horror and noir, with a lot of giallo elements.
