I never considered how powerful a story about personal integrity could be when it illustrates that person literally losing pieces of themselves.
I have to think the reason this movie didn't do very well in the US is because people do not value integrity. People experience too much personal conflict, not taking the time and effort to separate thoughts that are really their own from what they have accepted from others or have had beaten into them during their upbringing.
How would my own life have been different if I had seen Alita before my indoctrinations?

My complaint about the movie is that couldn't have been Chiren's brain because citizens of Zalem don't have brains since their brains were replaced by chips. I fanwank it away by saying Vector is a known liar and just used someone else's brain and kept Chiren's rare Zalem MiB chip for himself.
Also, it's dumb to say it objectifies women because Vector was doing it to men and women. It's cyberpunk body horror. You become an object to be experimented on.
You could just as easily argue that it promotes transgenderism as one's body is not one's self in this future.
I swear, the only reason Alita was so shit on by critics as being sexist was to make way for Marvel's Captain Marvel (who they point out was clearly the first female action hero ever).

Funny. Back in like 2006, I almost created a full scale model of Alita as she was first dig out of scrap heap. I had a project for a photo class and decided on cyberpunk as a theme. I ended up using Ghost In The Shell figures, a Blame! cosplay, and various scrap wires. Never got around to making the Alita model sadly.
