And there it goes again. I swear Simpsons these days are just outdated references after outdated references, all to culminate in the most tired cartoon series. Seriously each episode following the yellow humanoid and his family in Springfield has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the shoehorned virtue signalling, the series’ only consistency has been its ineffective use of pop culture, all to make wordplay dull, and humour dead.

Perhaps the die was cast when Groening Brooks, and Simon decided to make Simpsons about a dejected cynical take on the failing American family dream; they made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of actual cultural importance that meant anything to anybody – just consumable as bit-size “social satire” for brainlets. The Simpsons series might be anti-establishment (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-Stonetoss in its refusal of actual political engagement, humour, and a basic decency of being honest. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

The Simpsons have always been terrible. As I watched, I noticed that every time Homer made an honest mistake and want to acknowledge it as a moment of epiphany, the writers wrote instead that the character “uttered ‘Doh!’”

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. The showrunners minds are so governed by clichés that they have no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Simpsons by the same Seth MacFarlane. He wrote something to the effect of, “If these kids are watching Simpsons at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to watch Family Guy.” And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you watch “Simpsons” you are, in fact, trained to watch Family Guy.

I told the writer of this episode she should be ashamed of herself for doing this to a once great show and she blocked me
