First one was very close to the comics. Lovecraftian creatures, weird amulets, Hellboy kicking ass in some foreign country, etc. Del Toro actually made the nazi clockwork guy even better. Second one was a bit too much on the fantasy side for my taste but sometimes Hellboy comics can be like that. The meat-eating tooth fairies fit right into the Hellboy universe, as do the elvish twins, etc.
