It gets over the top in places and the tournament stuff drags at times, plus the whole vampire side story, but there's a lot of cool stuff in there that makes it worthwhile. I re-read Last Order after watching the movie and I actually appreciate the crazy stuff a little more.
Down on the surface, you've got guys like Zapan and Grewishka/Makaku thinking they're the hardest, toughest shit walking. But when you get up into the space city and beyond, there's gigantic karate niggas that break asteroids with their bare hands for practice. It's kind of a fun way to illustrate just how much the setting expands once Alita leaves the Scrapyard.

They're not even one bit true. There's a lot of resentment towards LO from people who were reading it when it was still ongoing. Waiting ages for another tournament chapter or two straight volumes of type-v mutant arc that was set 400 years in past and didn't feature any of the characters from the present sans one who was recently introduced, you can imagine how that can be very frustrating. On top of that, the scans that were available at that time were really, really bad and did not do justice to the beautiful art.
I'm skimming through the omnibus release and it's just pure kino. Great story, great characters, so much development, amazing worldbuilding and god tier art. If the original is 9.5/10, then LO is 9/10. The only thing holding it back from being a masterpiece, like the original, is the fighting tournament, which was obviously shoehorned by the editor to make it more appealing to the average reader and is a bit too out of place for a story like GUNNM.

The vampire lady's character design is based on a fan submission, not the arc or the actual character. It's not different from gunnm tonally, just set in a different time, before the space age, robots and cyborgs. It shows what happened after the world ended and how it lead to the world that we knew in GUNNM. Kishiro probably came up with type-v mutants as replacement for cyborgs so that this prequel arc wouldn't feel too out of place with the rest of the manga.
