Gore movies are like porn, if they are too vulgar and naturalistic they quickly become boring, "less is more" rule actually works in this case. Depravity as a metaphor in Salo could work in the 70s, but not in today's overstimulated culture, where people commodify symbols and laugh at symbolism. Irony and self-awareness suit our postmodern environment best, Zahler with his exploitation flicks is the poster child of that.

There's a Chilean movie where a teen is brought into a room and forced to fuck his own mother. Then they shoot her in the head, splashing all over the kids face. They force him to continue fucking the corpse. Not sure that's up there with newborn porn but it's what comes to mind as comparably edgy

it's just called Trauma. it's actually very similar to Serbian Film, both are very edgy and in the case of Trauma there's a lot of shitty CGI blood and shaky camera to "add tension", but they're both peddled by the director as "dude it's a metaphor about how the government fucks us lmao"

I don't know for sure if the cat died or not, but there was a cat scene in Men behind he sun, that one got to me more than Serbian film.

Last house on dead end street is also quite an edgy shock horror film from the 70s, about a guy making snuff films, the director basically made the film to pay for more crystal meth.

Martyr, a french movie about religious nutjobs that torture girls, really fucked up

Martyrs is the movie that fucked me up the most. A Serbian Film's pretty brutal but I un-ironically got some enjoyment from it.

It had a really good soundtrack and aesthetics. A lot of these kinds of films are pretty poorly made but A Serbian Film's actually got some merit.
