They really went in a weird direction with Batman's origin story

Maybe he begins to irrationally resent his mother for 'leaving' him alone in the world or for lying to him by telling him all he has to do is smile and the whole Joker thing is a kind of malicious compliance

I think it's kinda poignant that they are connecting the Joker and Batman through shared grief. Still not convinced it's better than having the Joker's background be a mystery, though.

Joker loses his shit because Gotham is in a state of rampant decay.
After he can't take it anymore (mom kicks the bucket) he pulls a Taxi Driver and focuses his rage on Thomas Wayne, who is the "face" of Gotham.
Kills Thomas, inadvertently setting up Bruce to become Batman down the line.
During that time (after the events of the movie) Joker likely loses his mind completely.

I don't see any reason why they would do that. If you're going to show that the Joker used to be some poor, random guy, why would you diminish the transformation by making him look crazy and perverted at the outset? Also, they seem to be making him sympathetic at the beginning, which is hard to do with motherfuckers.

I'm gonna guess some sort of psychological disorder and the joker visits her in Arkham. That wouldn't necessarily fully explain why she couldn't bathe herself but it's implied joker's kinda fucked too well before he got beaten.
