the industry used to be able to support intelligent professionals who gave a shit. goodbye to that, for the most part.

I still don't get it, but I find it exciting because it's like the writers have shown me a more expansive horizon for my intellectual development. This is what true art does.

New and old writers who were all inspired by either shows they worked on before (Cheers and Taxi) or were huge fans of old comedy like vaudeville, early and current stand up, or loved to write. Plus it was also a collaborative thing, several writers would put together an episode.

That doesn't happen anymore, most of the new writers have agendas to tell, or want to just write about the views they had in college, or worst yet, it's assembly line writers. Write a whole bunch of jokes, shelve them and then pull them out when you need them. Everything is non sequitur now so why focus on an A or B plot and have jokes revolve around the story and characters directly when you can just make random intercut jokes that you pulled out of a pile
