In the book dune, the Baron is obese, repugnant pederast who was once suduced by a woman which produced Lady Jessicca, Paul's mother
In the Brian Herbert novels they claim the woman who suduced him gave him the illness, which didn't exist till the movie came out.
The Miniseries Dune has the baron san pus, as unlike the film, it actually close to what the novel is.

I love all things Dune (well not the books written by the son).
The movie was a good attempt to tell the story in some of the limitations. Such as the 2 hour and change time limit.
However the story is hardly what is in the book (it opens and closes like the book (well close enough), but gets there in a very different way.)
Its has all the bad points of Lynch filmmaking, but very few of the good points, it changes the weirding way to a point that is alien to a reader of the book, the final fight with Fryd is anti-climatic, No jamis scene, and the ending breaks the who ecological concept of the novel by having it rain on arakis by magic.
I just enjoy the lush sets, good actors wasted, and that it doesn't completely lose it way till Paul and Jessica go into the desert.

If you want an actual bad 80s sci-fi film about which the conventional wisdom was and is correct, instead try the first Star Trek flick.

No it fucking doesn't, you're fucking wrong. The original book isn't some sacred gospel with grandiose, sprawling ideas like nerds have made it out to be. It isn't fucking Proust, it's a 400-ish page novel with straightforward ideas. It's an interesting sci-fi story which is capable of being well and faithfully condensed into a single film (where the film takes its own license, they do that, you know, and a good thing too), which is exactly what took place in the case of the 1984 original, as I've said. You're just complaining because it's fun to do so, and god bless you.

Lynch cant do epic scenes, this is the main problem. All the scenes that should be epic (Paul and Jessica alone in the desert, taming the worm, the final battle) feel small and contained, badly edited and with weird pacing. The only action scene done right is the worm attack
