Lost the artistry of the first one that Del Toro brought. Replaced it with weeb-porn.

Then it pulled an Alien 3 by getting rid of all of the characters that you gave a shit about from the first one (including killing off the most important one unceremoniously). Or in Newt's case making him a one-man cringe machine.

Then it sequel-baited and offered no real resolution.

Its so drastically different than the first movie that all I watched were the fight scenes on youtube and had enough.

To go on:
The movie kills off the competent cast of the original and replaces it with Pentecost's son (that he just so happened to have never mentioned ever in the first movie).
Mako dies and even her dying contribution is ultimately meaningless (leads to the fight in the OP and nothing else). She gets replaced with a Chinese actress.
The movie wastes a reprise of the main theme on a poorly-paced montage

Too much Power Rangers, not enough Robot Jox. Also, in typical corporate fashion "fuck the things that came before us and made us as popular as we are! We don't need them anymore!"

Probably my biggest (but not only) gripe with the movie is that too.

The robots in the first one moved and looked fucking heavy as hell (like they would be). I mean we're talking a goddamn nuclear reactor on two legs, right? It carries an arsenal of missiles, plasma cannons, a goddamn big ass sword, yeah? And then you see it and all the others skating around like it's Robot Jox on Ice.

Bunch of boring horse shit. I didn't think I could be so bothered by something so seemingly minor as how they moved, but boy did it fuck the whole thing up for me.

OP here, yeah I expected power rangers movement on the robots as well due to the internet comments but it didn't really felt like it. They still felt pretty heavy apart from scrapper.

The science guy villain totally made sense too. It was a consequence of that risky solution they had in the first movie. It was only the nigger lead that appeared out of nowhere but hey they gotta meet that diversity quota.

I didn't expect much after del Toro was no longer involved, but man was it pretty bad. Had some cool concepts that were just absolutely wasted by the script. The idea of a rogue jaeger could have been incredibly cool if they focused on it more instead of killing it off in the 2nd encounter.
The jaeger and kaiju desings were absolutely abysmal compared to the first one. I'm completely fine with them being sleeker and faster then the first movie because its farther in the future so the technology would have developed more, but man they really dropped the ball. The only ones with any personality are Saber Athena and Obsidian Fury. The kaiju were absolute dogshit, nothing redeemable about them.
Set-pieces were also a complete downgrade. We went from stormy Alaskan coastline, neon lit Hong Kong, volcanic ocean trench, to generic future cityscape 1, 2 and 3. Just a complete downgrade on every level.

I think the problem was they were all shown in a single fight scene whereas the first one they had like introductory fights so they felt pretty distinctive.

They should have just stolen a bunch of mecha anime tropes. The first movie already borrowed from G Gundam with every country having its own mech. They should have went even further with the sequel.

Look at all the cool fucking colors and special attacks in the first movie. The fight goes from in waist deep water, into a shipping yard, into a huge neon city, and then down into the deep sea for the final fight. It has alot of variety and its amazing.

2nd movie is the same generic grey city for the entire fight.

The location of the fights in the first movie also helped trick our eye to believe the CGI looked natural. Rain, water, and neon lights are a great way to cover up CGI. Something about it adds a natural complexity to the image that stops our eye from noticing questionable rendering. It is why cyberpunk movies have been using it for decades.

When you have big CGI blow outs in a gray city on a bright day, we have nothing to look at but the plastic robots punching each other.

but that scene was a masterpiece and was better than anything from the first movie.

The first Pacific Rim might not have been perfect, but it was leagues above this trash. While scale and action are important, the ultimate reason why it's so much better is its scope and intentions. Pacific Rim was a simple concept and told it simply. It had three plots that all connected seemlessly together by the end. It had a small enough cast of characters to keep it varied but uncomplicated. It rode its simplicity and managed to have fun with it. The new one shoved so much needless shit and flashy effects while forgetting the simple charm of the first. Yeah, this one might have been fun, but it had no substance, no soul.

Its true, in that you guys always follow that pattern, sure. This film is actually great though and Boyega should have won awards for his role in it.
