Despite being an action oriented film, the themes are extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of literary analysis most of the insights will go over a typical viewer's head. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of all the plot twists, to realize that they're not just entertaining- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Alita Battle Angel truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Alita's problems with adapting to her new life which itself is a cryptic reference to Isaac Asimov's writings regarding machines' coexistence with humans. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Yukito Kishiro's genius unfolds itself on their local cinema screens, aided by James Cameron's visionary approach at adaptating it to film. Mbadi was one of the best things in LO, a really different and memorable antagonist in the series. The fighting tournament was tiresome but watching him react to it and struggle to get control of the situation was great. If he's rolled into Nova I wonder how much of that is going to come through.

I think all the media was honestly shocked Alita broke 400 million, mostly thanks to China, but it's the total opposite what they expected. They were predicting like a 150 to 200 worldwide take. Yes, these characters are more complex than they appear on the surface level. Which isn't to say they're terrifically deep, but somehow some people still missed that characters like Vector and Ido are conflicted and not one-dimensional.
