He's right though. Having 30 films that did create modern techniques doesn't mean there are hundreds of examples of films not doing that. Citizen Kane pushed that idea in to the mainstream more than those other films.

Most movies are timless because they pioneered shit like that, it's one of the reasons Predator and citizen kane will always be classics even if the latter hasn't aged as well. Because in the old era they used the very best of modern film making craft.
