Maybe. The point I'm trying to make is as follows: Joker is cool because he embodies the cultural symbol of a court jester - he's the man who exists within the system only to mock it. It doesn't and shouldn't matter who Joker was before he donned this role, he could've been a kindergarten teacher, who cares. The role of a Joker is cosmic, universal. But making him a professional clown is hockey, it brings logic where logic wasn't necessary - "oh yeah he decided to call himself a Joker and act like a Joker because of some failed stand-ups". Think of it this way - Batman chose a bat as his symbol because he wanted to inspire fear, so he picked what terrified him personally. By this movie's logic a better backstory would've been:
