I think Square really tried to capture the lightning in a bottle from 7 onwards (ie. big budget jrpgs with cgi and whatnot) and the fans kept deluding themselves.

7 was good, maybe some of the previous games. That's it.

It had the most workable magic system setup that was the easiest to use out of all the FF games, but I didn't like the game much, even back then, the scifi/fantasy elements didn't mix and the story is messy, FF9 had more humour, I could get more emotionally invested in it and it felt more like a grand, fantasy adventure.

My main problem is that it's too linear, and the CG cutscenes where the characters look too different from their regular gameplay counterparts. Why is Riku white for most of the game but in cutscenes she looks brown?

It seems that since FF caught on with females, (as popular things tend to) it became about bishy men with bizarre fashion sense over dudes wearing more functional stuff like light plate armor.

VII is the most thematically consistent FF even today. It's about dealing with your past and all main characters (even the optional ones) and villain reflect that. IX has Freya Quina Amarant and the fucking trance system good job lol.

God the PC port looks like such shit. The VIII models look like crap two, it was much smarter to use chibis like in 7 but they only work well under the original hardware without those stupid mouths and better eyes.
