I've been watching Dragon Ball, and the first 2 seasons were kind of varied and fun. The Red Ribbon arc was hit and miss, but mostly fun as well. Now, since King Piccolo appeared, there are many episodes in which people moan and punch and levitate nonstop. Is this what's coming when I reach Z?

Yes. King Piccolo is like an appetizer for Z. However Z takes it a bit more seriously and the stakes are higher so don't let a distaste for King Piccolo turn you off from what's to come.
Either way the climax of the piccolo saga is the best in the entire franchise in my opinion. It's a great saga for it's own reasons
