Something at a more modest budget like that doesn't necessarily have to be bad (obviously). What looks kind of cheap to me more is the titlecard and type used.
It's possible this might actually be really strong, being a DePalma movie and all.
I trust De Palma to be at least somewhat interesting no matter what he puts out. So I'm looking forward to this.
the framing is extremely awkward, maybe that's the point though
Yeah, he's one of my favorite directors and I have faith he can do something compelling even with these constraints.
Yeah, I was thinking this too; partly what looks cheap. Everything is framed close up in a way that reminds one of home-made movies where they didn't have the sets / locations or props for good backgrounds so they have to film everything really tight. But maybe he's doing it for some effect.
Looks interesting
The dude's almost 80 and has no budget, give him a break,
Yeah. And I really think we should scale down on budgets more. We shouldn't expect movies to have to have noticeably massive sums of money spent just to convince us they're worthwhile or legit. So many great/classic movies were on relatively small budgets and scales.
>plebs shitting on De Palma
What the fuck is wrong with you, you fucking imbeciles? Did he say something bad about the orange daddy or something? Fucking idiots.
It doesn't look like a big budget capeshit flick so it's supposed to look 'pathetic'.
I love how the "director of SCARFACE & MISSION IMPOSSIBLE" is followed by a cheap ass, falling-from-the-roof stunt with over the top music. Kinda sad desu
>Brian De Palma stated in an interview publicly denouncing the film. "I had a lot of problems in financing. I never experienced such a horrible movie set. A large part of our team has not even been paid yet by the Danish producers. The film is finished and ready to go out, but I have no idea what its future will hold, it is currently in the hands of the producers. This was my first experience in Denmark and most likely my last."
Trust a dane, feel the pain
Yeah that was actually kind of sad. They shouldn't have featured action in that moment because it just looks weak in comparison.
Damn, so it is probably in fact as awkward as the trailer appears to be, but not his fault. I did get the impression from the cheap titlecard and weak effort with the trailer that it's not so much that his efforts were cheap but that the producers were cheapskates / lazy.
LAUNDERED
De Palma's my favorite Director and he hasn't made a good movie since the first Mission: Impossible back in 1996. Everything since has been fucking trash. Marvel should have hired him to make a Black Widow movie, especially since he worked with ScarJo in The Black Dahlia!!!FACT!!!
Anyone here who's a fan should check out the 2015 doc about De Palma's life and work. It's fucking great!!!FACT!!! youtu.be
i will
Really? You didn't like Snake Eyes and Mission to Mars? Even Femme Fatale and Passion were good.
Never trust a Dane.
bruh snake eyes is MAXIMUM comfy kino to watch on a rainy day. What are some other conspiracy/ murder mysteries that take place in one location?
Yeah def looks low budget but the main cast is solid plus even if its shit, it's De Palma shit so it's still better than most hollywood shlock
>Really? You didn't like Snake Eyes and Mission to Mars? Even Femme Fatale and Passion were good.
They had their moments but De Palam's greatest strength, his style, is also his greatest weakness. He only cares about what he can do with the camera rather than focus on a compelling story with strong characters. This is why his best movies are the ones where he was determined to succeed (Carrie, Scarface, The Untouchables, Mission: Impossible) while the rest are merely excuses for him to indulge himself. I do love Phantom of the Paradise though.
Carlito's Way is a good example. Really good movie but he fucking ruined it by showing the end of the film, with Carlito being shot, at the beginning. This is due to his fixation on Citizen Kane but the fucking twat didn't seem to understand that he was making a THRILLLER and by showing the end at the beginning you undercut all the tension. It's like showing Fay Dunaway being killed at the beginning of Chinatown. The point of showing Kane dying at the beginning of Orson Well's film was to tell his story through the people who knew him.
Most of De Palma's career feels like wasted potential!!!FACT!!!
Looks like a DTV flick. Why can't old directors find good DP-gaffer teams in the digital camera era?
>Passion
I went to see it at TIFF. It was like a Nespresso commercial with 15 minutes of De Palma content
