it's starts as a fun social thing and then becomes and addiction. they're people too and so they are prone to addictions just like everyone, except they have the funds and lots of time, to never stop so it becomes a bigger issue in their lives unlike average people who have limits due to money and responsibility. specifically cigarettes go great with alcohol and cocaine.

Most pick it up socially through the party scene or via workplace culture when they're shooting. Through the 80's and 90's Tobacco companies also sponsored films to include smoking to get around advertising laws and some actors got hooked because of a role they had to play.
These deals are actually still made today but for liability reasons they don't usually use tobacco on the set any more, they're herbal cigarettes or props that get cg'd over.
