most definitely, in fact there's a wonderful edit of the phantom menace that tidies up the pacing and superfluous elements to make it just that much better of a film, it's known as "the phantom edit," and I wholly recommend it to any true star wars gourmand.

Exactly. The movie was an inconsistent mess that didn’t know what it wanted to be. It ruined both new and old characters and destroyed over acring plots not just from the TFA but the saga as a whole.
