Gunnm is good, but the ending sucks. Last Order starts good then turns into DBZ for like half the manga, then ends decent. Mars Chronicles starts interesting but quickly goes insane, and is still ongoing.

People who dislike Last Order are usually easily upset by the fact that their arguments are easily refuted and proven to be thin and shallow, like your idiotic GT comparison. Dragon Ball GT was Toei's fanfic tier OC sequel to a story that was finished and done, and had very little to do with Toriyama. Last Order is a sequel by the original author, to a story that was abruptly ended midway. The two are absolutely nothing alike. You cannot brush LO and MC away just because you don't like them, they are every bit as canon and important as original Gunnm.

Kishiro just didn't have the same drive and level of integrity approaching Last Order that he did with OG Gunnm. It's built around a shonen fighting tournament, which is the ultimate lazy plot structure for a manga. There's a significant downgrade in the artwork and Gally's character is a watered-down version of her old self.
There are still bits of brilliance in LO - Mbadi is an innovative and effective villian and Ping is one of Gally's most interesting allies. The vampire post-apocalypse flashback story would have been great as its own series but vampires don't belong in Gunnm. Overall, though, the end result is half-baked. It especially screws up Nova's character by splitting him into a bunch of corny clones, and there's lots of other cheese in the story, from space karate to Gally's cat tail.
The reason for all this, tragically, is that Kishiro is now married to Gunnm whether he wants to be or not. It's the only thing he's created to achieve significant popularity, and it's not even that popular in Japan. Many Japanese manga fans I talk to have never heard of it. Publishers aren't interested in running anything he creates that isn't Gunnm, so whatever stories he wants to tell have to be told through it.

Here's Gally from LO, note how much simpler her face structure is - it's not just the line work that's less detailed, but everything in LO looks flatter and lacks the subtle 3-dimensionality that is present through Gunnm.
I don't fault Kishiro at all because being a mangaka is a brutal business and he's locked into Gunnm whether he wants to be or not, but the original series is a huge step above the follow-ups. LO is a fun series, well above average for a manga, but the original Gunnm is one of the best comics ever drawn.

I wondered about that myself. My take is that it's something Yoko had too before losing her memories, but when Gally starts to remember parts of her past, she unconsciously remembers this chrome things too. My theory is that when she paints her face with blood/the other substance in the sewer againts Makaku, it's already because she remembers those chrome metal things (on some panels the blood take this shape while dripping across her cheeks). What is it really ? I don't know, maybe some kind of blindage/ war stuff, I don't think it is only aesthetics, because she starts to use them first in the heat of battle (the war paint), so I think it means something like that : somthing linked to war memories of her past. I've only read the original series so I don't know if it is explained in Last Order or Mars Chronicles.

There are fans in Japan, but not many of them. The Japanese have this weird thing where they produce some of the most brilliant creative works but the general Japanese population has the most shit-tier taste imaginable and ignores the genius stuff that's produced there in favor of derivative garbage.
See Metroid, Blame, Brigadoon, Kaiba, the list goes on and on. Nihei Tsutomu, the mangaka of Blame, is an especially tragic case. He produced one of the most amazing and distinctive sci-fi stories ever, and held fast to the rule of "show, don't tell" that so many mangaka can't handle. The result: his parents and friends said they couldn't understand it, sales were low. He went through repeated cycles of dumbing down his output until he produced a boring shonen-style series that ended up getting a TV adaptation. His art style is no longer recognizable, not even a crude parody of its old self. All of the grit and soul is gone. A true success story!

In his commentary in Holy Night, he mentions that when he suffered his breakdown he lost his assistants. He may have had assistants who could replicate his best style and get chapters finished on time, and now he doesn't anymore.
Or he may have assistants do all or most of the work now, it's common among established mangaka. Kishiro wrote that the last couple chapters of OG Gunnm were done with no assistants, so I don't think the original style was something that came from them.
The ending to Gunnm was rushed but if he really had no assistants it's insane he managed to do it, the art is still top-quality in the final chapters and working with those deadlines and no help is insane.

Sure, but it wouldn't look as bad if you hadn't reduced the image to ant size. What LO lacked is consistency (and superior 90s cyberpunk aesthetics). If the original gunnm looked fantastic in virtually every panel, then LO would range from mediocre to great and lacked that consistency. I heard he couldn't afford his assistants anymore and it was only him and his son or brother drawing the manga. If that's true then that would definitely explain the simplification of his art.

The backstory in that part is kind of interesting, but the concept of vampires lurking behind the scenes of history doesn't improve the story.
I also don't like the impact winter backstory because then a lot of the problems in the world can be tied back to a natural disaster. A big theme in Gunnm is people's karma coming back to haunt them. It's more interesting when humanity's problems stem from their earlier actions than from a meteor impact.

Here's the other problem with LO: it has these massive apocalyptic-scale fights but what I found myself reminded of over and over again was how much more interesting the fights in Gunnm were. Gally fighting Jashugan, both with Motorball-regulated bodies with power limits, was a hundred times more interesting than the DBZ battles with the Jovian and Venusian teams in LO.
"More power" is the cheapest way to make physical conflicts more interesting.

The vampires in LO aren't magical creatures, they're mutants with some vampire-like charasteristics, but they're missing most of the meme ones like being hurt by crosses, silver, sunlight, garlic, stakes in the heart etc. They can't transform, they can be killed like any normal human, they can get sunburnt and they have a reflection. There's all kinds of weird and spooky parasites, animals and viruses in real life, but somehow scientists creating superhuman, immortal soldiers with """"science"""" is more realistic and believable?
