Really never got with Kill Bill. The whole thing felt undisciplined and all over the place. Reports from cast and crew apparently confirm the same; that Tarantino would make stuff up and improvise on a daily basis. The result is that they ended up with hundreds of hours of footage that somehow had to be cut into a coherent movie (two, in the end.)

For me, the main problem with this movie is The Bride character. She's very boring and one-dimensional. Lucy Liu manages to create more of a character in one scene than Uma Thurman did with two hundred scenes.

Yeah, that sounds about right. It almost like the reverse sequel kino, where movies like T2 and Aliens are remembered more than the original. Kill Bill vol 1 is just great revenge scene after scene, where Vol 2 spends all this time going over king fu training and bill talking about Superman and the Beatrix begging her life with some other assassin, only for Budd and Daryl Hannah to die via snake-in-trailer and Bill to get Hokuto-no-ken’ed.

Hammers/maces are heavy, inelegant, and unwieldy and yet you see them being used frequently by cavalry because the horse compensated for all that. The sword is good on horseback, good on the ground, and has a fighting chance against any weapon in the world. The hammer meanwhile is hardcountered by several things, doesn’t have the same jack-of-all-trades appeal. The sword can act as hammer or a blade
